Our next meeting will be Monday, October 16th,
7:30 pm at the chapter hanger at Gundy's.
Snacks: Last names starting with T-V
I can't believe how fast the month of September flew by. I hope everyone had a chance to partake in at least some of the events that occurred last month.
I was able to attend both days of the Tulsa Fly-in in this year. Although the final numbers are not in yet, it looks like the fiftieth annual Tulsa Fly-in was a success. The last reports that I heard were that over 280 aircraft made it to this year's event. On Saturday, the turnout from the local community was exceptional. Every time I looked over at the people haulers, they were full. Chapter 10 was responsible for aircraft registration, T-shirt sales, ramp security, and aircraft parking. There were no complaints concerning any of these areas. This can be directly attributed to the outstanding effort all of you put into making the fly-in work. I would like to thank all of you that participated this year. It was a fine effort!
I was especially proud to be able to dine with three of our charter members at the banquet held the last night of the fly-in. Roger White, Randy Brooks, and Ralph Mong were honored for their roles in creating that very first fly-in. It is amazing that fifty years ago these guys put on an event that is still around in the same basic form today. I'm sure that they probably had no idea that they were starting such a fine tradition back then. I am glad they were able to be a part of this year's celebration. Thank you.
Due to scheduling conflicts, I was unable to make any of the other events that were schedule for the last weekend in September. I hear that all of them were outstanding though. There was the Bean Dinner over at Airman Acres followed by a concert later that night and then Gundy's wingding the next day. The reports have it that all were well attended. It seems to me that the aviation community in the Tulsa area is getting stronger each year, despite the reports from the press that general aviation is shrinking.
Saturday, October 14th is our next Young Eagles day. It will start at 9:30 in the morning and last until noon. Just as always, we will need all the help we can get to be ready for this event. If you are interested in helping us out on this, come on out to the chapter hangar on Saturday. I guarantee that we will be able to find something for you to do. Besides, it sure is a lot of fun!
The EAA B-17 Aluminum Overcast is coming back to town shortly. It will be here for a short stay starting Friday November 3 and is scheduled to depart the following Sunday on November 5th. Chapter 10 has helped sponsor these visits several times in the past along with EAA 10 vintage people. I have volunteered each time it has been here and have had a ball doing it. The people that come to look and fly on it and the stories that many of them have make this a worth while effort. We will be contacting you in the next couple of week to help us put this event on. The B-17 is usually one of our best chapter fund raising events that we do. The money we earn from this will probably go directly into our Flight Academy scholarship fund, so please help out when asked. We will have more information in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned.
Nominations are still open for next year's group of EAA chapter 10 officers. We have had an exceptional group of people lead this organization in the past. To keep this tradition going, it takes an effort from chapter members willing to step up to the challenge. If you are interested in running for and holding an office in our organization, please contact any of the officers. Nominations will close this month and the new officers will be voted on at our November membership meeting. Here are our candidates so far:
| President | Bhrent Waddell |
|---|---|
| Vice-President | John Nys |
| Treasurer | -- open -- |
| Secretary | Bob Thrasher |
Again, if you would like to run for one of these offices, please contact a chapter officer for further details. Our chapter is only as strong as you the members want it to be, so please help out. Thanks.
As many of you may have heard, Guy Baldwin passed away tragically last week while performing in an air show in New Mexico. Although Guy was not currently a member of our chapter, many if not all of us had dealings with him on a regular basis. In addition to signing off on all of our medicals, he was heavily involved with the local aviation scene. He was one of the charter members of EAA Chapter 10 IAC in addition to helping out the other aviation groups here in town. Our condolences go out to his family. He will be missed.
"I am alive. Up here with the song of the engine and the air whispering on my face as the sunlight and shadows play upon the banking, wheeling wings, I am completely, vibrantly alive. With the stick in my right hand, the throttle in my left, and the rudder beneath my feet, I can savor that essence from which life is made."

Craig
My husband, Jim Gentry, has been visiting with Craig Loomiller about our upcoming dance. This is Jim's wife, Juli. Since he is in Midland at the Air Show, he's asked me to send you the attached information about our Celebrate Freedom Big Band Hangar Dance to put in your publication.
We would love to have your organization involved in any way they wish. We will need help at the daytime event with security for the planes that are on display, marshalling, etc. We will need people to help with setup on Friday and/or Saturday. We need folks to help work the Silent Auction, PX, and Concessions at the dance and then of course break down of tables and chairs after the dance and general clean-up of the hangar on Sunday morning around 10:00. There's lots to be done, and many opportunities for volunteers to help! Any participation will be appreciated!
Attached is a shorter version of the Press Release that Jim sent Craig earlier. We thank you for publicizing to your group and look forward to some positive response! Those who would like to volunteer may contact Jim by phone at 605-5093 or by email at jjgentry@cox.net.
By the way -- we just got confirmation that we will be having a Celebrate Freedom Preview Night at the Riverwalk Crossing Pavillion from 7-9 p.m. on October 28. This is a free event, open to the public, hoping to inspire them to want to come to our dance. We will have live 40's music, singers, swing dancers, military vehicles and more to set the mood. We'd love for you guys to show up and enjoy the fun!
Thanks so much!!!

Roger Wieden held the annual Gundy's WingDing at our chapter hangar again this year. This event has been going on for at least 23 years now. It was started by Phil Hart and Malley Norton when they owned the airport. Soon after I moved to Gundy's I attended one of the early ones in 1983 or 1984 and it was a fairly small group then. As Gundy's grew the event began to gain in popularity and the event has maintained a fairly large turnout. We all appreciate that Roger Wieden has continued with this tradition. Roger provides all the wings that are so expertly cooked by the well trained chefs. He also provides a Jupiter Jump to keep the kids entertained.
This year the weather was really nice and it made for an enjoyable gathering. As usual this year I was one of the chefs. It always seems like there will be a small turn out when we start cooking. When it is time to eat there is always a really nice crowd of people to eat and visit with. A great time was had by all!!
For the last couple of years I have missed the annual Airman Acres Bean Dinner. I have no idea how long this event has been going on, but it has been quite a few years. There is always a good turn out of people and airplanes.
If you have not been there, here is the deal: They cook up a huge kettle or two of beans. The guests bring their own bowl and when the cannon goes off they will ladle some beans in your bowl. Some people bring deserts and cornbread to go with the beans. This year there seemed to be an extra portion of meats in the beans. They were exceptionally good!
It is always an excellent excuse to go look at airplanes and visit(tell lies) with other aviation enthusiasts.
This is so much fun! You know, going to airports and eating and looking at airplanes and telling lies (visiting with folks)!!!
Last year the Skyhaven airport had their first annual Brat Feed and I was able to attend. Skyhaven is just north of Tulsa on Highway 75. It is about one mile east of 75 and on the Tulsa County line. It is a nice airport community with a grass strip. They had an exceptional turn out last year, especially considering it was their first one..
Apparently they liked it and decided to make it an annual event. So, show up at around 11:00 on October the 14th and do the usual. You know – eat, look at airplanes and tell lies.
