Our next meeting will be Monday, July
17th, 7:30pm at the chapter hanger at Gundy's with George Hurt,
dealer
for Challenger Aircraft.
Snacks: Last names starting with N-P
It's time for Oshkosh again. A lot of our members will be going or are already arrived in Oshkosh. I just wish I were able to attend this year. I always have a good time when I go. This year will be a little different in that Lynn Coltharp and Paul Shireman are not going. They are the ones that usually arrive early and set up camp for the rest of us. This year, you will have to do without them. I guess the plan is still to set off Chapter 10 camp on row 556 or 557. It depends on how they number the rows this year. Our group usually camps on top of the rise whatever it is labeled each year. I hope you guys have fun.
There was a terrible aviation accident last week near Gundy's airport involving Doctor Ron Barnes. Dr Barnes was a friend to all aviators in the area and had attended several Chapter 10 events in the past. He will be missed. We need to say a prayer that his grandson recovers from his injuries. All of us should take a moment when something like this happens and review our own flying skills. Please try to always fly safe.
We had another Young Eagles Event last month. This one was over at Sand Springs Pogue and involved a youth aviation academy put together by EAA member Sherrie Redding. I was told that this was the best organized event we have ever taken part in. I was unable to go as I was cooking both sausage and pancakes at our monthly breakfast. Sherrie had all the paperwork complete and everyone was where they were supposed to be. All we had to do was load up and fly.
I felt that last month's meeting went over pretty well. I had the feeling that our guest speaker Bob Nuckolls could have talked all night. His presentation was both entertaining and informative. His approach in trying to simplify aircraft electronics is truly needed in our sport. If you missed the meeting, you sure missed a good one.
Terry Heinz has agreed to become our new newsletter editor. Lynn Coltharp has been doing it for several years without complaint and now needs a break. We all need to thank Lynn for the fine job that he has done for us. We can all help Terry get off to a good start by having everyone submit an article. If you are doing something newsworthy, you need to write it up and share it with the rest of us. I know Terry would appreciate it.
This month's issue of the newsletter will also contain a current roster of all our members. Several people have requested this information. This was determined to be the best way to get it out to you. If your information is incorrect or needs to be updated a little, please contact our Secretary Bob Thrasher about it. In the future, we will also try to include a list of just what everyone is currently working on. So stay tuned.
Glider season is now in full swing. I went up the other day for three hours and twenty minutes over at Pryor. I covered about 70 miles of territory and reached an altitude of 7,000 feet during my flight. It was a lot of fun. I was only worried once during the entire flight. I was about 25 miles from the airport and was about 1,400 feet AGL looking for a place to land when I hit a thermal that took me back up to 7,000 feet. It's a piece a cake when you know what you're doing and are lucky as well. I think luck plays a bigger part in it though.
I also made a trip out to Parowan, Utah last week during the holidays to watch some glider races that were going on. I'm glad I wasn't competing as they were experiencing some pretty rough weather. On one flight there was lightning all around them and most everybody's canopy had frosted over at altitudes above 16,000 feet. Some even reported ice pellets striking their aircraft. Another day had several land-outs in winds exceeding forty miles-per-hour. With these conditions, the pilots had to remain in their gliders to hold them down until help arrived. One guy had to wait for over 5 hours in his glider until his crew found him. He was in a pretty remote valley and it took some time to pinpoint his location. I'm glad it wasn't me.
Our guest speaker for this month is George Hurt. George has the Challenger Aircraft dealership, Adventure Aviation, in Vinita. The Challenger is one of the most successful and capable of the ultralight types around. Some of our members have reported seeing a Challenger perform years ago at an airport called Just Plane Fun in East Texas near Lufkin and they were really impressed with it's capabilities. It should make an interesting meeting.

It is that time of year again. Time to go crazy and campout on one of the hottest days of the year. Some of you may remember the first one we did. It was at White Horn Cove and it was genuinely hotter than hell. It was really miserable and we have had a lot of fun reminiscing about that event and how miserable we all were. Since that time we have been having this event at the Tenkiller Airpark at Cookson. There is a nice area to camp near the Mary Kelly Memorial with pine trees around it. There is usually a nice breeze there and the camping has really been quite pleasant.
The Cookson airport is a pleasant place and the neighbors that live on the airport usually come out to visit with us. We have selected the date to coincide with the annual "COOKSON JUBILEE". THE COOKSON JUBILEE IS ON JULY 15TH FOR 2006. They have entertainment and food at the festival adjacent to the airport. The entertainer this year is Bryan White.
Myself and Paul Shireman are usually the "ringleaders" in getting this annual campout going. This year we have committed our time to building our new Rans S6 airplanes and we will not be there. Next year we hope to be there!!
Anyway, at the board meeting it was decided to go ahead and mention the camp-out and hopefully some airplanes and campers will show up this year.

I sure hope everyone is enjoying the heat. I know I'm not. July is really a pretty good month with the exception of the heat. Most of us get the 4th off and it hosts some good fly-ins, one of those being the EAA fly-in at Eldorado Kansas. Roger and EJ White have told me about this fly-in for the last couple of years so I decided this would be the year that I would go.
Being the first Saturday of the month it was also the Ponca City breakfast. With Jana working for the Post office on Saturdays, I always seem to have an empty seat when that first Saturday rolls around so I asked Joe Walker if he was flying the old Fairchild to Ponca for breakfast. Joe said he was doing some maintenance to the old Fairchild so he would not be flying. I asked him if he wanted to ride along with me. He agreed to do so.
I asked Joe to be at the house bright and early, 6:30 AM, as I wanted to get to Ponca early and leave early to get to Eldorado. There did not seem to be as many aircraft in Ponca as there usually is on such nice days. I did find out later that Eldorado also had a breakfast that morning and we saw planes there that are normally at Ponca. Now I know what some of you are thinking, "Jeff and Joe ate breakfast at both locations" that could be very likely but this was not the case. We actually passed up the second breakfast, I know it doesn't look like it, but we did.
We arrived in Eldorado around 9:00. There were a pretty good number of planes already there when we arrived. I have to tell you, those chapter 88 folks really know how to treat fellow EAAers. We were escorted to the parking area for home builts only and given a bag of goodies which included a small plaque. That's right - everyone got a small plaque just for showing up. The war birds even had to park in the north forty with the rest of the factory stuff. They really seem to be a grass roots kind of chapter. As you walk the field you see many projects in progress. I mean all kinds of projects! I counted them up. Just in the hangers that were open there were 7 projects in work. Now some of these projects were factory jobs in renovation but that Eldorado bunch is busy.
I also have to say that the quality of the home builts there was really good and there were many different models. Not just RV's. The Zenair folks were well represented as well as many plans built aircraft.
There were several there that Joe or I had never heard of. Some were like Jim Franklins "Woodsy", a one of a kind. We had a good visit with many of the builders and we also ran into EJ & Roger White. They are on their way to Oshkosh but they always make the stop at Eldorado before they head on out. Joe and I had a quick hamburger before we headed on back. We just can't pass up food. It was hot and bumpy on the way back. I was glad to get back on the ground. Frances Jones and Paul Millet landed after we did and they had made a day out of it also. They went to Ponca for breakfast, Eldorado for the fly-in and Beaumont for lunch. I wish I would have thought of Beaumont. Oh well there's always next year.
I will not be at this months meeting as Jana and I are flying to a friend's house in Indiana. We will be there for two weeks. We will see everyone next month when our two Air Academy scholarship recipients give us their report on the academy. As of this newsletter I have been trying to get in touch with Ben and Jake but have not been successful. I wanted to get some words in from them but you know how those teenagers are: always busy in the summer. We will just have to wait until next month to hear from them.
Until next time, keep the greasy side down.
Jeff
As Craig said in his article, there is a chapter roster included in this newsletter. Bob Thrasher sent it to me and said the font was a bit small since Craig had requested he format it to fit on one page. Well --- us older folks can not read stuff that small so I took the liberty of reformatting it to fit on two pages. Hopefully everyone can read it at that scale. I do not know how it will work with our web page but Bob Minich will probably put the famous "9" in front of everyone's e-mail address so the automatic scanners can not harvest your email addresses from it.
Terry Hines has agreed to take over the newsletter for the chapter. I sent him some of the things I use to do the newsletter and some articles that had been contributed. Terry's workload increased just in time for the newsletter so I agreed to go ahead and put out this month's newsletter. Terry felt he would be better organized by next month and be able to go ahead with the newsletter. He is already thinking about changes and improvements he would like to do for the newsletter.
That is what we need – some new ideas and enthusiasm for the newsletter. Thank you Terry!
