Our Annual Picnic is Sunday, May 21st 1:00 pm
Bring a covered dish or desert. Burgers and hotdogs provided.
The picnic replaces the normal Monday meeting this month. Note that due to Mother's day,
the picnic is the Sunday after the third Monday.
The Tulsa Chapter 10 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will conduct a Young Eagles Rally at Gundy Airport east of Owasso on Saturday, May 13th, from 9:00 AM until noon. (Rain date: May 20th)
We will need all of the help we can muster. We will need at least 10 pilots and planes, and 8 10 ground crew. Ground crew include:
Please volunteer immediately by calling Charlie Freeland (272-9829) and leaving a message on his answering machine if necessary!
Pilots, get ready! Finish your annuals - Check your medicals BFRs - fly off your landings & takeoffs - dues paid up at EAA National - insurance paid up.
Speaking of insurance, each pilot must have aircraft passenger seat liability insurance. For those EAA members who choose to insure at a level of $100,000 per passenger seat, EAA will automatically provide an additional $1,000,000 liability umbrella policy. This coverage is only in effect while participating in Young Eagle Flights. Pilots who choose to insure at lower levels may still participate. However, the additional insurance will not apply.
For further information and volunteering, call Charles Freeland, 272-9829 or his office 272-0691.
Charles
I hope everybody is starting to dry out. Getting all that rain in such a short period of time sure makes a mess of things. It's a good thing we didn't have a poker run scheduled or it might have been worse. It was bad enough as it was. Gundy's airport owner Roger Wieden lost the roof on one of his hangars as well as uprooting a couple of trees from the Monday night storms. I talked to him the other day about it and he told me someone on the airport had an anemometer that indicated 90 MPH from that same storm. I hope everyone else survived all right.
The Bhrat feed last month was rousing success. If you didn't make it, you sure missed a good time. In addition to the Bhrats, we also had Bhrent Waddell with his RV-6. Bhrent did a nice job on it and you can tell he is pretty proud. We ended up serving one hundred brats that evening.
For some strange reason, I didn't stink up our house this year. I boiled the brats in bear and onions in our kitchen at home. Last year it stunk like hell, but this year it wasn't too bad. I didn't even get yelled at this time.
Our schedule this month is going to be a little messed up. May is always the month for our chapter picnic and it is usually held on the Sunday preceding the third Monday of the Month. Unfortunately Mothers day is also on the same day this year, so we decided to move our picnic to the following Sunday to avoid a conflict. Our chapter picnic is going to be on Sunday May 21st this year at 1:00 pm. As we have done in the past, please bring a covered dish for everyone to share and the chapter will provide the hamburgers and hotdogs. Last year we had a pretty good crowd. In fact, we almost ran out of meat. Hopefully we will have plenty this year, all we need is a really nice day.
Our Young Eagles coordinator Charles Freeland has put together another big event for Saturday May 13th. This event is going to be in all the newspapers in the area so hopefully we will have a good turnout. In order to pull this off, we need everyone's help. Come on out and give us a hand. We need pilots and we need ground crew personnel. Last year I volunteered to be the briefing guy. I had a ball doing it. Come on out and give us a hand this Saturday.
If you can't attend the Young Eagles event, the Saturday before the picnic will also have a couple of chapter activities. We are planning on having our monthly pancake breakfast on Saturday the 20th from 7:00-9:00 a.m. Last month we had an excellent turnout for the pancakes. In Fact it was almost a record day. Immediately after the pancake breakfast, we are going to have a chapter spruce up to get our facility ready for the picnic the next day. We thought of having a chapter work day but decided to do just a hangar spruce up instead. We plan on giving the hangar a good cleaning. It has been getting a lot of use lately from a variety of different aviation clubs so it probably needs it. Please come on out and have some pancakes, then stick around to help us clean the hangar. I think we will have enough work for everyone to take part. The more people we have to help, the faster the work will go.
By the time you read this, we will have purchased a new digital projector for the chapter. I have borrowed one on several occasions to help with presentations at our chapter meetings and for our Christmas party the last couple of years. It was decided by the board of directors that we probably ought to get our own unit. I sure it will open up new possibilities for our monthly guest speakers. We also received a donation the other day that will help us out a lot. My neighbor Marge Bunting donated a very well maintained gas grill to the chapter. With as much cooking as we have been doing lately, it sure will help out. Thanks Marge.
With the ground as wet as it is, soaring conditions pretty much suck right now around here. All this water tends to suck heat out of the sky instead of giving off heat. As soon as it dries out a bit, things should start to look better. I was supposed to go back down to Talihina the last weekend but with the ground so wet at my house; I don't believe I could have gotten my glider of the hangar without getting stuck. As I was looking out my window at the rain and drizzle on Saturday, I received a phone call that informed me that the sun was currently shining and conditions were great in Talihina. This was news that I didn't really want to hear. Oh well, there will be other days.
See you at the picnic.
Craig
The 2006 Air Academy Scholarship recipient is Ben Hill. Ben is the son of Marc and Theresa Hill of Owasso. Ben is a 15 year old who has logged 5 hours of actual flight training. We are pleased to have Ben Hill as chapter 10's 2006 Air Academy Scholarship winner.
We really wanted to send an additional excellent candidate who applied and we were successful in getting funds to send both of them this year.
Other aviation organizations in the area were approached to help fund the second candidate. The VINTAGE AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION CHAPTER 10 pledged to provide half the cost of the trip for the second candidate. The EAA CHAPTER 10 ULTRALIGHTS (GREEN COUNTRY ULTRASPORT FLYERS) passed the hat and raised $320 to help send the second candidate. One of the Warbirds contributed the balance of the funds necessary to send him. We really thank the above contributors for helping send the young man. (The cost to send a candidate this year is about $1150.)
The second recipient is Jacob Barber also 15 years old. Jacob is keenly involved in aviation and even has a bit of actual flying experience.
Everyone can look forward to hearing the reports from these young men after their experience.
This month is our annual picnic. It will be on Sunday May 21st at 1:00pm
The picnic takes the place of our regular meeting on the third Monday in May. Normally we would have the picnic on the Sunday just before the regular meeting and that is Mother's day this year so we moved it to the 21st.
Bring a dish to share and the chapter will provide hamburgers and tea to drink.
This is always a fun gathering so be sure to put it on your calendars.
The monthly pancake breakfast will be held on Saturday, May 20th just as we normally would have it (the Saturday following the third Monday).
Our president, Craig Loomiller, has planned the annual hangar cleanup to take place after the pancake breakfast May 20th. So, plan on staying after the pancake breakfast to clean the hangar. We will move all the stuff out of the hangar and clean out the stuff that accumulates in all the corners and probably mop the floors. Bring brooms and dust pans to use in sweeping. Some rags to clean the windows and dust off stuff would help also. If you have any areas that you particularly want to see get a good scrubbing please bring cleaners etc to do that with. Some of the things that come to mind are the bathrooms, kitchen grill and refrigerator. Maybe we should even remove everything from the kitchen cabinets and give them a good scrubbing.
One of the main things we need is someone to "take charge" of the cleanup and point people towards tasks.
I recently had an aircraft maintenance technician (AMT) ask a question:
Hey Doctor Dan, how much damage around the edge of my squared tip prop blade can I file out? What if the tip looks round instead of the original squared shape I once had?
Well I have to admit that even though this is a common occurrence, I don't believe that anyone has ever asked me that question. Hence, another prop tip subject!
Any nick, gouge or cut around the edge of a propeller tip of an aluminum propeller should be treated just like any other nick, gouge or cut to the leading or trailing edge with the following exceptions to the basic design shape (including tip shape), diameter, and any shot peened surface. If you will refer to FAA Advisory Circular AC20-37E or AC43.13-1B Section 4, you will note that both documents have similar repair specifications for this type of damage. As a good rule of thumb any damage to the edge should not exceed 1/8" deep with a repair depth not exceeding 3/16" deep. Any deeper is considered a major repair and must be repaired by an FAA Approved Propeller Repair Station. Another good rule of thumb is to blend the damage parallel with the edge to 10 times the depth of the damage. For example: a max depth of 1/8" (0.025") x 10 = 2.5". (Editor's question: 1/8" = .125", so 0.125" X 10 = 1.25" does not it??) You are allowed more than one repair providing they don't overlap each other. Some propellers are manufactured with a square tip, some with elliptical tips and even "Q" Tipped. Don't alter the design. We are not engineers. There are good reasons for a particular shape of a propeller. If it is altered, then it is considered a Major Alteration. "The alteration could effect not only the performance but also the airworthiness of the propeller. So Doctor Dan, what can I do to keep the tip squared looking like it did out of the factory?" Well, for a nick that is within limits for minor repair, there really shouldn't be any real concern, But when a squared tipped propeller has so many repairs over time, the only thing you can do is to reduce the diameter, but only if a diameter reduction is allowed for your particular installation. Furthermore a diameter reduction is a major repair and must be accomplished by a FAA approved propeller repair station.

What was the first production airplane manufactured by Beech Aircraft Corp?
Be the 10th person to email me with the answer and you will win a prize!
As always you can visit my web site, www.customprop.com, to read up on this article or any past articles that I have written, for the answer to this month's question and your entire propeller needs and prop information. Stay safe and stay tuned next month for the next prop tip. Until then y'all have a great day and be careful!

I have been doing the newsletter for longer than I can remember and it would be good for the chapter to get a new slant on the newsletter.
Sooo --- this is a plea for someone to take over the newsletter for a while!!!!!!!!!!! Don't be afraid you will get "stuck" with it forever. Like last time, when Bob Minich stepped in, I will be willing to get "back on the job" after I have enjoyed a period of time away from the newsletter.
Please let me, or one of the chapter officers, know if you would be willing to take over the chapter newsletter for a while.
Thanks
