Our next meeting will be Monday April 18th, 2005 7:30pm
at the chapter hanger at Gundy's.
Snacks: last names starting with I-L
Some of our members forgot to pay their dues and have been dropped from the membership. They will not get this newsletter. So, if you know of someone in that situation give them this application and tell them to send it in.
You know how the old saying goes “April showers bring May flowers”. Boy, the way things are going; we sure will have nice gardens. I can’t believe how much rain we’ve been getting. And we can’t forget the hail! There’s no way that I can forget the hail, all I have to do is look in the garage at my wife’s car. She really got pelted. I hope everyone had their airplane in some place that was covered. I feel sorry for you if you didn’t.
If you missed last month’s meeting, you sure missed a good one. I said the same thing about February’s meeting. I’m sounding like a broken record. Renowned engine builder Monte Barrett gave an interesting talk about what happens during the ignition cycle of a 4-stroke motor. I’ve never really thought leaning an engine lean of peak before. With my “warcoupe”, it’s never really been a problem. I can’t remember the last time my C-85 was at an altitude that even required leaning. Maybe some day!
This month’s meeting will go off into another area, and that is the new Sport Pilot rating. Everybody I talk to wants to know more about it. I get 3 to 4 e-mails a week from local people wanting more info. We will be showing a DVD that EAA National put out on the topic. In addition, we will have a pretty nice door prize. We have been given a copy of some software called Kitlog Pro. It is described as the complete builder’s resource tool for experimental aircraft. It looks to be a pretty nice package. Speaking of EAA national, our April meeting will also feature the “Bhrent Waddell 4th Annual Bhrat Feed”. Bhrent started this several years ago to get people excited about Oshkosh. I know the convention is in August, but it’s never too early to think about it. So come on out early at 6:30 next Monday for some of Wisconsin’s finest. We will serve Bhrats, corn-on-the-cob, and chips to all that show up. All we ask for is a small donation to help cover costs. I’ll see you there.
At last month’s pancake breakfast, we had several people bring in items to sell. I bought a few things myself. Unfortunately, nobody wanted to buy my brown velvet Bi-plane painting. It’s been one of my prized possessions for years. I couldn’t believe that nobody wanted it. I probably should have came down off my $5.00 price. We will have the Flymarket at each of our pancake breakfasts this year, so bring out your stuff. We will have a hangar clean-up after the pancake breakfast on Saturday April 23rd. We didn’t have one last year and you can sure tell it. Our hangar gets a lot of use throughout the year and just like everything else, it requires maintenance. We have a few roof leaks, the windows need cleaning, and one of the toilet’s needs to be reattached to the floor to name a few items that need addressed. Please try to make attend. We can sure use your help.
At our April Board meeting last Monday, we reviewed all the applicants for our scholarship to the EAA Air Academy. This year was especially hard. All of the applicants were very deserving, which made it extremely hard to select one. The selection committee finally settled on just one applicant. I am pleased to announce that pour 2005 Air Academy Scholarship winner is Nick Mills from Dewey Oklahoma. Chapter member Bob Veit submitted Nick’s application. Nick is thirteen years old and besides being an honor student, a dream of his is to attend the Air Force Academy. All of the applicant’s are to be congratulated for submitting their documentation. They were all very impressive.
We had our first Tulsa Fly-in meeting last month. The fly-in last year did quite well in that the event broke even and maybe even made a few bucks. Chapter member Charles Harris who is the Chairman of the event each year has asked us to brainstorm with the membership concerning just what kind of special guest we would like to see at the Fly-in. The event always does better when we can feature or highlight a specific person or aircraft. If anybody has any ideas or has a special relationship with someone of interest, please contact Jeff Wedman or myself and we will pass it on.
We started glider operations last month but I hadn’t had a chance to go up until last week. I went up a couple times, and then came right back down a little while later. Hopefully the conditions will improve with the warmer weather. Just as long as it doesn’t rain too much. The “warcoupe will be back in the air very soon. It has been out of annual for a while. I decided to annual it myself; it just took longer than I thought. I had to get my IA first. I planned on getting it last winter. Winter came and went, and I finally received it last month. I would like to mention that if you ever have any registration or airworthiness issues, please go and talk to Bart Dalton. I’ll bet Bart knows all the FAA guys down in OKC. I had a registration problem and he knew just the person to talk to. I was able to get it taken care of right away. Thanks Bart.
That’s all for now. I’ll see you at the hangar.
Craig
This month is our annual Brat Feed at the meeting. Try to show up early around 6:30 so you can get your share of the brats. There will be some other goodies like corn and sauerkraut to go with the brats.
Bhrent Waddell has a secret recipe that he uses to cook up those great brats. They are exceptionally good when he prepares them his way. I know first hand that he got this recipe at Oshkosh and they really know about brats up there.
Come on out and have a nice time eating and enjoying the meeting.
The meeting subject this month will be about the Sport Pilot rating. EAA National has sent us a DVD with info on the subject.
The vintage chapter holds their meeting each month at the Hardesty Library at 93rd and Memorial. This month Earl Down (Publisher of the Oklahoma Aviator) is presenting a program about the Sport Pilot rating and they have invited us to attend. It should be a very interesting and informative meeting.
Their meeting starts at 7:30, Thursday, April 28th.
We will be having a door prize at the meeting this month. The people at kitlog.com have donated a KitLog Pro software package to be used while building a homebuilt airplane. This is a quite useful and valuable article for our door prize. So, show up and get a chance to win it.
We will be having our annual hangar clean up this month after the pancake breakfast on Saturday April the 23. Jeff Wedman may have more details elsewhere in this newsletter. Come prepared to do some cleaning/fixing/improving, etc/etc. If you have any ideas about what needs to be done get with Jeff Wedman to get them in the queue.
The Fly-Market at our March pancake breakfast was greatly improved. Several of our members brought goodies from their stash of airplane parts. A couple of our members found things that they REALLY were wanting and made purchases. Thank you – to the people who brought items for sale. It looks like this thing could really develop into a good event each month.
On April 23, after the pancake breakfast, we will be having a spring cleaning for the chapter hanger. We did not have a cleaning last year so we are a little behind the curve ball. We have a pretty long list of things that need to be done. For example we have several roof leaks, the windows need cleaning, the mens toilet needs some new anchor bolts and the list goes on. So please come on out and have breakfast and help out with the cleaning. We want the hanger looking real good for the young eagles and there parents on 4/30.
EAA 10 Vintage is having Earl Downs as their guest speaker this month and he will be talking about the new sport pilot licensee. I saw on the EAA website where Earl has just been signed off as one of the newest sport pilot instructors so he is probably well up to speed on any questions you might have on this subject. The Vintage group has invited us to join them for this meeting. (See date, time and location elsewhere in this newletter) April 28 7:30 Thursday
I would like to congratulate Nicholas Mills on being selected for our 2005 Air Academy Scholarship. As usual Nicholas was up against some very tough competition which makes it very hard for the selection committee. We wish we could send everyone that applies for the scholarship. Please remember the Air Academy also has some Scholarship money. If you know of anyone who wants to go to the Academy they can pay there own way and/or apply for financial assistance through the Air Academy. You must fill out a different application for financial assistance, which is on the EAA web site. If any one needs help applying please give me a call at 272-8566 and I will be glad to help.
For you Young eagle pilots, don’t forget to send in your Young Eagle credits to the Chapter address as we use those to help offset the cost of the Air Academy for our scholarship recipient. We get $1 off for every young eagle credit up to ½ the tuition. You can also send those credits into the Air Academy and they will apply them to the person of your choice or if you don’t designate an individual they will use them for the ones who apply for assistance. We really appreciate the help from the Young Eagle’s pilots. Thanks a bunch. Please send your Young Eagle credits to:
EAA Chapter 10 PO BOX 1985 OWASSO OK 74055-1985
Or you can give them to one of the officers at the meeting or pancake breakfast. See Ya at the meeting and come early for some of Brent’s brats.
Jeff
The Tulsa Chapter 10 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will conduct a Young Eagles Rally at Gundy Airport east of Owasso on Saturday, April 30th, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. (Rain day, May 7)
We will need all of the help we can muster. We will need at least 10 pilots and planes, and 8 – 10 ground crew. Ground crew include:
Please volunteer immediately by calling Charlie Freeland (272-9829) and leaving a message on his answering machine if necessary!
Pilots, get ready! Finish your annuals - Check your medicals – BFRs - fly off your landings & takeoffs - dues paid up at EAA National - insurance paid up. Speaking of insurance, each pilot must have aircraft passenger seat liability insurance. For those EAA members who choose to insure at a level of $100,000 per passenger seat, EAA will automatically provide an additional $1,000,000 liability umbrella policy. This coverage is only in effect while participating in Young Eagle Flights. Pilots who choose to insure at lower levels may still participate. However, the additional insurance will not apply.
I have already heard from a home schooling coordinator who says she is bringing up about 30 kids. The Tulsa World will be given our announcement. And info is being sent to Craig Day at Channel 6. Other announcements will go to the Owasso Reporter, Chelsea Reporter, Claremore Daily Progress, The Collinsville News, The Oologah Lake Leader, and The Skiatook Journal to name a few. We are trying to make this a major rally. We need everyone’s help.
For further information and volunteering, call Charles Freeland, 272-9829 or his office 272-0691.
Charles
Monty made a presentation at the March meeting about engines and how they work. This guy really understands engines. He has made several presentations in years past at our meetings and he really does a good job for us. If you missed the March meeting you missed a good one. He really knows how to get the most out of an engine.
A great big “THANK YOU” to Monty
Howdy Folks & My fellow EAA Members,
I think it’s been almost a year since I last attended a chapter meeting and then it may have been a year before that since I’ve attended. Not a lot of excuses for me except I’ve been a night shift person for about the last 4 years and don’t see any changes down the road. I’ve tried to get my rear up on Saturday mornings to attend the pancake breakfast but can’t seem to get past that either. I feel really guilty about neglecting the membership and hope you can forgive me. I’ve been thinking about making a contribution to the newsletter and discussed this with Lynn. He said that he would be happy to except any information I could provide about Propellers. Since I can’t seem to make it to the meetings I will make an effort to write an article each month about propellers. I’ve decided to call the article “Prop Tips”.
I’ve been working on the first article but haven’t finished it in time, but should have it finished in time for the May issue. The subject I picked for the first article is “Propeller Mounting”. If you have an idea or prop subject you would like me to write about please email me at: propdoc@aol.com and feel free to check out my web site at www.customprop.com.
I will try hard to set my alarm clock and bring some goodies to sell at the swap meet not to mention eat some of them good ole pancakes! Hope to see ya all then!
Dan Cork (Dr. Dan, the Prop Man)
The Wild Onion Breakfast at the Tenkiller Airpark at Cookson, Oklahoma was well attended this year. The weather was nice so a lot of people were able to fly in. As usual the food was great. They added some home made salsa this year which was excellent, really got your attention!!
Paul and I flew down Friday evening and camped out. Jeff was supposed to join us but he got sick and decided he had better stay home. At about 7:00 we used the airport car to go into the Smokehouse and had some really good ribs and hot-links. Six guys from the Riverside airport flew down and pitched their tent near us. They must have read one of those ads for a tent and not realized the number of people they say can sleep in a tent is greatly exaggerated. They all six spent the night in it but I can only imagine how “cozy” they must have been.

The famous Beaumont Hotel in Kansas will be having an event this year on June 3-4. It sounds like a fun event however, it conflicts with the Biplane Expo. They will be having lots of interesting things going on. You can take a look at the happenings at this web page: beaumontwatertower.com. If you have never been there it is quite unique. You land at the airport and then taxi down the STREET and park your airplane at the hotel.
Please note: Our chapter now has a Post Office Box for our permanent address. Any communications to the chapter should be addressed to the new address.

At this month's chapter Board Meeting, the 4th of April, the committee reviewed the applications submitted by several young people for the scholarship to the Air Academy. All the applicants were deserving and it was difficult to make a decision. However we can only send one so a decision was made to offer the scholarship to Nick Mills. Nick was encouraged to submit his application by Bob Veit. Bob is one of our active members and flies an Rv-6. Maybe Nick can come to the next meeting with Bob and we can have a chance to meet and visit with him some.
Anyone who is interested in attending on their own can find info on how to do that by going to the National EAA web site. You can visit the EAA web site at www.eaa.org and select the Air Academy link at the top of the page and you will find all the info about how to participate in this program. If a person has financial issues, there is an application for other scholarship money also.
