Our next meeting will be Monday March 21, 2005 7:30pm
at the chapter hanger at Gundy's.
Snacks: last names starting with G-H
If you didn’t make it to last month’s meeting, you sure missed a good one. In case you hadn’t heard, we celebrated fifty years as an EAA Chapter last month. What made it really special (even more than it already was), were the four charter members who were in attendance. Gary Crookham, Randy Brooks, Ed Felmlee, and Roger White are four out of our six charter members still out there aviating. After talking to all of them, I still don’t know who was the most interesting. I’m pretty sure though, that Randy Brooks is probably the craziest of the bunch. I am not really sure how old he is, but he finds time to act as a Flight Adviser for three different EAA chapters for both fixed wing and rotary aircraft. On top of that, he just received the FAA Master Pilot Award for fifty years of aviating without a major incident or accident. And I thought I stayed busy!
To prepare for the celebration, I spent a couple of weeks going back through our archives. We actually have pretty good records dating back all the way back into the late fifties. As I leafed through them, name after name jumped off the pages. I kept saying to myself, “Hey! I didn’t know he did that”, or “Wow! He used to be President” so many times that I lost count. I think that is what makes this organization truly great. Throughout the history of our chapter, there has been a genuine willingness by our membership to pitch in, to help out, or to take charge whenever there was a need for it. This chapter contains a wealth of experience spread out among all of our members. We have a really neat little club here. We all should be very proud.
Did everybody happen to catch the article in the Tulsa World East Side Community Section a couple of weeks ago. (It was supposed to appear in all areas but it didn’t happen?) It was a real nice article about our anniversary. They just got a few of the facts wrong though. We are not the Experimental Aircraft Authority, and I swear I didn’t say most of those things that they quoted me as saying. Jeff Wedman is my witness on that. The EAA even published a little article in their web-based newsletter last week. We are still expecting an article in the Owasso Reporter but haven’t seen it yet. Earl Downs of the Oklahoma Aviator plans an article on our fifty-year anniversary too. EAA National has also said we will be included in the next issue of Sport Aviation. It will be kind of nice to get some positive publicity for our Chapter. So stay tuned.
While I was eating a piece of cake at the party, chapter member Jim Franklin came up to me and said something pretty remarkable. But first, let me give you a little background. I had Randy Brooks get up and talk a little about the criteria for receiving the Master Pilot Award during the birthday presentation. So afterwards Jim came up to me and said; “Guess what, I have fifty-two years of flying without an incident or accident.” I immediately took Jim over to meet and talk to Randy. So don’t be surprised if in a couple of months, Chapter 10 has another Master Pilot recipient listed in our membership roles. Chapter Ten is truly rich in experience.
We started the Aviation Fly-Market at last month’s Chapter Pancake Breakfast. I’d like to say that we had an outstanding turnout, but it just wasn’t the case. If Jim Franklin had not brought by three items, we wouldn’t have had any at all. Thanks Jim. Several people forgot all about it and said that they would bring something next month. I’m planning to bring some stuff myself. I figure it will take several months for the market to really take off. So keep on trying. I think we will all benefit by having this available, but we just need to get used to it.
Chapter Treasurer John Nys reported at the board meeting the other night that most people have renewed their dues for the year. Thanks for your prompt response. If you haven’t paid yet, please get them in soon. You can mail them in or bring them to this month’s membership meeting. If you haven’t paid by the first of April, we will be forced to drop you from our membership role. I hope that we don’t have to take this step, but we need to get everybody paid up. Thanks!
We currently do not have any applicants yet for our scholarship to the Flight Academy up at Oshkosh. Are there no 12 to 15 year olds out there? We need everybody to get his or her kids and grandkids to submit an application. After all, this is an expense paid trip to Oshkosh for Pete’s sake. You still have time to submit, the deadline is at the end of the month. Look for details in the newsletters or call a chapter officer for more details. But you’ll need to get moving. Time is almost up.
Monte Barrett of Barrett Performance Aircraft will be the guest speaker at our March membership meeting. Monte is considered to be one of the premier Lycoming engine builders in the United States. Many of the top aerobatic and airshow performers currently use his engines. In addition, right now he is the only authorized builder of IO-390 engines in the U.S. Some of you might remember that he gave a talk several years ago to our group on Lycoming O-320 engines that was very interesting. Come out to the meeting and see what Monte is up to now.
Craig
Everybody has stuff lying around the hangar that they don’t use anymore. Here’s a chance to clean out you hangar, pick up some extra cash, and know that all your prized stuff will be going to a good home. You can’t beat a deal like that.
Craig
Editor's Note: The last fly-market was not participated in well. Hopefully we can get our fly-market flying. It may take a while for it to take off.
The Tulsa Chapter 10 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will conduct a Young Eagles Rally at Gundy Airport east of Owasso on Saturday, April 30th, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. (Rain day, May 7)
We will need all of the help we can muster. We will need at least 10 pilots and planes, and 8 – 10 ground crew. Ground crew include:
Please volunteer immediately by calling Charlie Freeland (272-9829) and leaving a message on his answering machine if necessary!
Pilots, get ready! Finish your annuals - Check your medicals – BFRs - fly off your landings & takeoffs - dues paid up at EAA National - insurance paid up. Speaking of insurance, each pilot must have aircraft passenger seat liability insurance. For those EAA members who choose to insure at a level of $100,000 per passenger seat, EAA will automatically provide an additional $1,000,000 liability umbrella policy. This coverage is only in effect while participating in Young Eagle Flights. Pilots who choose to insure at lower levels may still participate. However, the additional insurance will not apply.
I have already heard from a home schooling coordinator who says she is bringing up about 30 kids. The Tulsa World will be given our announcement. And info is being sent to Craig Day at Channel 6. Other announcements will go to the Owasso Reporter, Chelsea Reporter, Claremore Daily Progress, The Collinsville News, The Oologah Lake Leader, and The Skiatook Journal to name a few. We are trying to make this a major rally. We need everyone’s help.
For further information and volunteering, call Charles Freeland, 272-9829 or his office 272-0691.
Charles
The Air Academy Application due date is coming up fast. All applications need to be in by the 31st of March. EAA 10 will pay for air fare and Air Academy fees. The chapter’s candidate will be chosen in April. Please send your application letters to the EAA 10 address:
EAA Chapter 10 PO BOX 1985 OWASSO OK 74055-1985
Please keep in mind if a person is not selected for the Chapter 10 scholarship, this does not stop anyone from going to the Academy. You can visit the EAA web site at www.eaa.org and select the Air Academy link at the top of the page and you will find all the info about how to participate in this program. If a person has financial issues, there is an application for other scholarship money also.
I sure enjoyed the story telling the charter members did at last month’s meeting. It is just amazing that this chapter was started over 50 years ago and is still going strong. Hats off to the charter members of EAA 10!!!
I must tell everyone that after having the RV 8 flying for just over a year, Jana finally got to go with me to the Ponca City breakfast. Jana has never been able to go since she works Saturday mornings. She was on vacation the first Saturday of March so she got to go. She could not believe the number of airplanes that showed up at the breakfast. She looked South at the approach end of the runway at one point and counted 11 airplanes on final all at the same time. I think she understands why I don’t like missing this event. See ya at the meeting.
Jeff
Most people are not aware, but there is a health hazard lurking, that can seriously affect some of our closest friends. That is the loss of the monthly newsletter from your friends at EAA chapter 10. Without the newsletter, people become morose, agitated, and confused. Besides that, how is a person to know when the third Monday of each month rolls around, so you can come to the meetings and share your love of aviation with us, or maybe just get out of the house for awhile. In any case, fill out the form and bring it to the meeting in person or mail it along with your check to me:

Now for some fun stuff. RV10 update. The long awaited finish kit is here. The first shock was finding out the doors have some assembly required. They come in two pieces which need to be trimmed, bonded together, trimmed, fit to the doorway, (more trimming), and all the linkage built and installed. My shop, after four days of working on those two doors has about two inches of fiberglass covering everything, including anyone silly enough to think it's a good time to visit. Happily the end is in sight. I should have the engine to hang the first part of the week, Monty Barrett has some last minute modifications to do, and then we are in business.
Monty has also agreed to do a program for us. He is the only authorized assembler for the new Lycoming IO-390 engine. I'm sure he'll give us all the particulars on that engine, plus answer any questions pertaining to aircraft engines in general.
See you all the 21st. Or is it y'all?
John Nys
Please note: Our chapter now has a Post Office Box for our permanent address. Any communications to the chapter should be addressed to the new address.

Well, it is finally flying time again. We have been sitting around all winter griping because the weather has not often been fit for flying. Although we have to contend with the mighty March winds for a while our flying activities should pick up now.
May 19th is the annual Wild Onion Breakfast at the Cookson Airport. This event is one of the earlier flying events each year and for many of us it heralds the beginning or our flying season. They serve a nice breakfast with all the trimmings on Saturday morning. A lot of us go down on Friday night the evening before and camp out. We usually manage to get into town and have a nice meal that evening at one of the local restaurants.
I learned the hard way last year to do a double check of all my camping gear before leaving Gundy’s Airport. When I began unpacking all my gear I realized I had not put my sleeping bag in. By that time we had already begun to imbibe, so I could not fly back to Gundy’s to get it. The weather was not just real cold so I managed to convince myself that I could manage to sleep without it. Actually I realized that it would most likely be a sleepless night. Some of our Chapter 10 members who live in that area came up to visit and one of my camping buddies took great delight in telling them that old dumb Lynn had forgotten his sleeping bag. Ken Cook said he had a sleeping bag in the back of his truck left from a recent camping trip and I was welcome to use it. It did not take a millisecond for me to tell him thanks.
The Cookson Airport is set in a beautiful setting among the trees overlooking the Tenkiller Lake. It is also an airport community with nice houses on both sides of the runway. Some of the local residents usually come out to tell lies with us and we always enjoy that. They are a nice bunch.
The Sun-N-Fun fly-in in Lakeland Florida is scheduled for April 12-18 this year and there will be several Chapter 10 members there this year. John Kurt has been there quite a while already. He goes down early and volunteers to help get things ready for the Fly-in. Clarence Larsen will be leaving soon to do some volunteer work also. Clarence would already be there but he has been waiting for his Rans S-7 kit to get ready. He is going up to Kansas to pick it up. When he gets it home and inventories all the components he will get in his motor home and go to Sun-N-Fun. Several other of our members will fly down just for the event. Paul Shireman is flying down and has an extra seat for someone to share fuel costs. Call Paul at 272-7135 if you are interested. He is planning on leaving April 10 and returning the 15 or 16.
Right after Sun-N-Fun, the Pineville, La. Chapter will be having their Spring Fly-In. Paul Shireman, John Kurt and I all flew down there for their Fall Fly-in last year and it proved to be one of the more enjoyable fly-ins we have ever been to. Hopefully we can make it down again this year and be joined by more Chapter 10 members.
Next on the agenda is the Southwest Regional Fly-In. This year it will be at Hondo, Tx. Hondo is just west of San Antonio, Tx. It has been moving all around that area for several years and was in New Braunfels the last two. I thought New Braunfels was a great place for the fly-in. They have scouted out Hondo and feel it will be even better. Hondo is about 30 miles farther but it makes our route a bit farther from the “dreaded circle” around Crawford, TX. Recently Dale Olsen called me and said he was going to try to make the SWRFI and camp out with us. He is going to try to get some of the guys from the Sacramento area to come down also. He is hoping to get that going as an annual event for his buddies out there. So, come on down and maybe we can swap lies with Dale.
Enough about upcoming fly-ins for now.
Lynn
