Our next meeting will be Monday October 18th, 2004 7:30pm at the chapter hanger at Gundy’s.
Snacks: Last names starting with T-V.
The year is winding down and we are nearing the completion of another great year. We have had many new projects this year and this past month added another to our chapter.
This month we will have another great program. We will have the team from Lowrance to present info on their new color moving map GPS. We will also be selecting our slate of Officers for the 2005-2006 terms. Come make your voice heard. We will also be discussing our Christmas party plans.
Wow!!!!! We had a great time flying young eagles. We ended up with 73 kids and several adults. Ms. Gunderman donated $100 for the event. We used the money for hot dogs to feed the kids.
GO BURT RUTAN!!!!!!! EAA grass roots has put a man in Space for less than the price of a new Boeing 737. It appears than Space is not as advanced as our government wants us to believe.
As I leave you I want you to think about a quote from Randy Sohn:
If you don’t think you’re the best pilot in the business, MAYBE you’re in the wrong business. If you think you could never make a mistake, you are REALLY in the wrong business.
Bart
The Young Eagle rally Saturday was a great success. We flew 73 kids and about 5 parents. We broke the jinx of bad weather (remember our 4 attempts in the spring?). Weather was perfect. Chapter 10 members turned out well to support our efforts.
I want to thank our pilots for their efforts. Paul Shireman, Bhrent Waddell, Larry Trusty, Larry Brooks, and Randy Harris each made between 4 and 6 flights apiece. We had a great ground crew. Mike Moran, Marvin Williams, Jeff Wedman, E. J. White, Craig Loomiller, John & Sue Kurt, Terry Hines, and John Larimore all worked hard to make everything flow smoothly from the cars parking to the hot dogs. A great vote of thanks to all of you!
We had great press coverage too. I am aware of coverage from the Owasso Reporter, Tulsa World, and KJRH channel 2 television, as well as the home schooling network located in the Owasso area. Again, thanks to everybody that made this event the success they it truly was!
Charles Freeland and Dan Kloker, Young Eagles Coordinators
(EDITOR'S NOTE: I believe Craig Loomiller sent something like this in one time and I put it in the newsletter. It took Craig about a year to get out of his "doghouse." This was sent in by Jack Woodward. Let us see who spends the most time in their "doghouse." I always try to use everything anyone is kind enough to send me.)
The weather for the Tulsa Fly-in at Bartlesville was really great this year and there was not too much bad weather in the surrounding area to prevent people from flying in. During the middle of the day Friday and Saturday it got a little hot, but not enough to be unpleasant at all. I don't have the exact count of airplanes, but I believe it was around 325.
There were a good number of great airplanes to look at and everyone was pleased at the number and quality of the airplanes for their perusal.
This fly-in is one of those really enjoyable fly-ins for anyone that likes to look at airplanes and talk to people about flying and building/rebuilding airplanes. There are always enough activities to enjoy and people to visit with. Not so much stuff you just get worn out trying to take it all in. It is really a fun event to attend.
EAA Chapter 10 had a good number of volunteers to help operate they fly-in and that always makes it much easier. The officers of EAA Chapter 10 extend a great big "Thank You" to everyone that helped with the event.
Each year there are a number of people who bring in some vintage cars for us to look at and reminisce over. These old cars show that a lot of tender loving care has been given them and add a lot to the fun of this annual fly-in. "Thank You" to all the people who brought them to the event.
A page of additional photos are available.
Everyone is always interested to hear about fun places to fly. There are a lot of fun places to fly but a lot of them are not convenient for a place to stay and a means to get away from the airport.
Sallie and I spent the weekend of October 2nd in Fredericksburg, Texas where we met with three other couples who are friends of ours. This is a quaint little town in the heart of the Texas "hill country." This area is located west of Austin and a bit North of San Antonio. The area was originally settled by a lot of German immigrants and many of their descendents live there today. Of course the German heritage lends itself perfectly to have an OCTOBERFEST. So, we were able to join in on the festivities of the OCTOBERFEST. The main street is lined with many quaint little shops and it is very enjoyable to just stroll along the street and look in all the interesting shops. There is also a number of German Restaurants providing excellent food as well as other excellent restaurants. There are several wineries in the area providing tours and tasting. The countryside is very pretty and it is just a skip down the road to the "famous" Luckenbach, Texas town made famous by Willie, Waylon and the Boys. Of course, there is nothing there, but we can say, "we have been to Luckenbach."
Here is the neat thing for pilots: they have a hotel right on the airport. I don't mean some old converted hangar or barrack; this is a first class hotel. It is called the Hangar Hotel and looks like a hangar from the outside but it was built brand new that way. It is only about two years old and is really nice. You can tie-down your airplane on the ramp and sit on the balcony and look over it that evening. They have a lounge and a restaurant next door. The restaurant is called the Airport Diner and it too is brand new and styled like a Fifties diner. We found a rental car agency right on the field, it was called the "Motor Pool" and we were able to arrange for the car while I filled the plane at the pay at the pump fuel spot.
So, here is an idea for a weekend getaway. Fly into Gillespie County airport and stay at the Hangar Hotel. Get a car right on the field and drive into Fredericksburg(three miles) and do the town. The next morning have breakfast at the Airport Diner. You will enjoy a great weekend getaway!

It is the time of year when we select a new slate of officers to lead our chapter for next year. The present officers have done an excellent job of keeping our chapter rolling for 2004.
The present slate of officers that are being presented for election are:
Any nominations from the floor are welcome.
The annual "Wing-Ding" that Roger Wieden hosts at Gundy's was held on October 3rd this year and the weather was really just about as nice as it gets. He had the flour-bomb run in the morning to get things kicked off and then they began cooking a huge pile of chicken wings. People brought dishes of food to go with the wings and it really was a nice event.
The food was great and there were plenty of people to tell aviation lies to. When it came to time to eat the hangar quickly filled up and many had to eat out on the ramp. Thanks go to Roger for having the "Wing-Ding."
