Our next meeting will be Monday September 20, 2004 7:30pm at the chapter hanger at Gundy’s.
Snacks: Last names starting with Q-S.
Summer is over and we are ready for the Tulsa Fly-in. We have a great year so far and we are going to have two really great programs during September and October.
Those of you who have not been called to help with the Tulsa fly-in please call Craig and I as we are needing all volunteers. There will several new and different things that will take place this year. We hope that by changing some things that we will not need as many people as in the past to park airplanes. We are going to have some very great Forums on Saturday also.
This month’s meeting has sort of changed from what I mentioned last month. We will still have a very important meeting on the Slick Electronic Ignition system at a later date. We were contacted by a paint manufacturer who really wanted to present a program on aircraft painting this month. This had been one of our goals at the beginning of the year as we listed out our topics of interest for programs. I am very excited to see the interest on the part of the paint company. Plan to bring all your questions and hopefully they will be able to answer them. Next month we will have a program brought to us by our friends at Lowrance about their new Lorans. This should also be a very interesting program. The November meeting will be our annual pie auction and we will conclude the year with the Christmas Party. This month we will have nominations for our new officers for 2005 and 2006. Tell all your friends and lets try to pack the place the place out. I hear there is a new RV flying over at Claremore. Plan on hearing some long tales about that, too, at this month’s meeting. Also all the stories from people who have been attending the various Fly-ins and Fly-outs over the past months.
As I close I want to leave you with a quote from a famous aviator:
I have said that the lure of flying is the lure of beauty. The reason flyers fly, whether they know it or not, is the aesthetic appeal of flying.
- Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)
See you at this month's meeting!!!
Bart
So you have a dirty belly; or your airplane does? That means solvent on the floor, down your arm, in your eyes, on your clothes, complaint from the better half, etc, etc. Sound familiar? Better solution: waterless hand-cleaner. It does a good job with less work, less mess and easy cleanup.
Just smear it on, rub it around a little and wipe it off. I use GOOP hand cleaner. Be sure to get the kind that does not have an abrasive in it. I buy a bundle of terrycloth towels at Sam's for general cleaning. They work really well and they are cheap enough to throw away when dirty.

Well, it's that time of year again. You know what I'm talking about. This is the time of year when all the airplanes are out and about. The Claremore Airshow was last (11th & 12th) weekend, while the Tulsa Fly-in is this (16th & 17th) weekend. Next weekend (25th) is the Airman Acres Bean Dinner, and the following weekend has two events scheduled. We have a Young Eagles event scheduled for October 2nd and then Gundy's Wing Ding is slated for Sunday the 3rd. The rest of October is just as exciting. What I really like about it is that you can attend all these events without breaking a sweat. I just love fall weather!
Everybody be sure to get out and attend the Tulsa Fly-in this year. Even better would be to come on out and volunteer to work this year. We have a variety of positions available and we won't turn anyone away. You can park airplanes, monitor the ramp (one of my favorites), or work in event registration. We have something for everyone to do. I personally like this type of fly-in better than any of the big ones. This year the Fly-in will have lots of airplanes to look at. The factory boys are even going to show up with their new iron. I hear they will also be giving demo rides to prospective clients. Sounds like they had me in mind. We are going to have a banquet on both Friday and Saturday nights. The Saturday night banquet is special in that my wife's band will be providing the entertainment. You have to see them, they are really good and I'm not just saying that. The vendor booths have all been rented out and we will have a full slate of forums to attend on Saturday. In fact, I'm going to give a forum at 2:00 Saturday on flying gliders.
My glider flying has really taken off lately. The other week I had another personal best in that I flew my glider around for 3 hours on just one flight. In addition, I went down to Uvalde Texas last month for a week of glider flying. Man, was it fun! While I was down there, I had the opportunity to fly a high performance two-seater for 2 days. I am really hooked now. I'm already reading the classified ads trying to figure out how much money I need to talk my wife out of to get one of those high performance gliders for myself. Either that or I'll have to get a better job, because I really want one bad. Anybody out there who has a high performance glider they just would like to give me? I'll be waiting for your call. In the meantime, come on out and hear my forum on Saturday.
We are going to have officer nomination at next month's membership meeting. We will be accepting nominations for the following positions at the meeting:
The Chapter hangar has been getting a lot of use lately. We have had several different aviation organizations use our facilities over the last several months. The only problem is that the hangar is starting to look kind of dirty. We usually have a spring clean up every year but for some reason or another didn't have one this year. I look for us to have a fall cleanup either in October or November to remedy this situation. We really need to clean up our facility before the Christmas dinner in December. Watch the newsletter for more details.
Chapter 10 is going to have another Young Eagles event on Saturday October 2nd. Chapter Young Eagles Coordinator Charles Freeland has put out the word to several youth organizations in our community and has gotten back a good response. As a result of a kindly donation from the Gunderman family, we are also planning to feed the Young Eagle participants after their flights. We will need several members in a variety of roles to pull this event off. We will require ground personel, pilots, and cooks for this event. If you are interested, please get in touch with Charles at 272-9829 to volunteer. These Young Eagle events are a good source of credits to offset our annual scholarship costs associated with sending a student to the Flight Academy up at Oshkosh. So come on out and give us a hand, you'll enjoy it.
Our pancake breakfast is on Saturday September 25th between the hours of 7:00 to 9:30. Come on out Saturday for some good food and stories. Be sure to bring a bowl with you so you can go directly over to the Bean Dinner at Airman Acres afterwards. If you haven't been to this event before, mark it on your calendar for this year. There is usually quite a good turnout from the local aviation community. I'll see you there.
Keep the shiny side up
Craig
The Tulsa Chapter 10 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will conduct a Young Eagles Rally at Gundy Airport east of Owasso on Saturday, October 2nd, from 9:00am until noon.
We will need all of the help we can muster. We will need at least 10 pilots and planes, and 8 to 10 ground crew. Ground crew include:
Pilots, get ready! Finish your annuals. Check your medicals, BFRs, fly off your landings & takeoffs, dues paid up at EAA National, insurance paid up. Speaking of insurance, each pilot must have aircraft passenger seat liability insurance. For those EAA members who choose to insure at a level of $100,000 per passenger seat, EAA will automatically provide an additional $1,000,000 liability umbrella policy. This coverage is only in effect while participating in Young Eagle flights. Pilots who choose to insure at lower levels may still participate. However, the additional insurance will not apply.
I have already heard from a home schooling coordinator who says she is bringing up about 30 kids. The Tulsa World has been given our announcement. Other announcements will go to the Owasso Reporter, Chelsea reporter, Claremore Daily Progress, The Collinsville News, The Oologah Lake Leader, and the Skiatook Journal to name a few. We are trying to make this a major rally. We need everyone's help. Come for breakfast and stay to fly kids!
For further information and volunteering, call Charles Freeland, 272-9829 or his office 272-0691.

If you every thought about stripping the paint off the old Cessna or decided its about time you put some paint on that home built you finished a couple of years ago, you won't want to miss this months meeting. This month's program is about paint. The good folks at Global Aerospace Coatings are coming to pay us a visit. I spent about an hour with Conor McGee and Bob McDonald in their warehouse on north Sheridan last month and they had all kinds of helpful information. I told them I wanted to get my fiberglass parts ready for paint and they introduced me to there line of Sherwin Williams's products for the aerospace industry. Conor and Bob both sure seem to know there stuff. They educated me on the proper products for filling pinholes in fiberglass and also provided literature on the primer they recommended.
Global Aerospace Coatings is a Sherwin William's dealer and also they sell 3M products. They can provide application products as well. Bob McDonald will go over the application process and provide us with some application manual. After the meeting they will be there to answer any questions you may have on paint removal and application. This will be an excellent opportunity to get those questions answered that you've always wanted to ask but had no one to ask. So if you're interested in making your old or new bird look its best, don't miss the September meeting Monday the 20th.

Jeff Wedman has decided to finish out his beautiful RV-8. He has decided, at the urging of lots of people, to polish the aluminum and fill and paint the fiberglass parts. I have gotten to enjoy watching him sand and sand and sand and still cuss those horrid pinholes. He keeps asking me about the finishing process on my Varieze and how I was able to endure it. While I had some pinhole problems they were not nearly so prolific. There must be something in the process of vacuum bagging his parts that created a great number of pinholes. |

When we first built the chapter hangar Bill Horn volunteered to keep the restrooms clean. Bill just came out to the hangar and kept them clean. Nobody really even knew he was doing it . we just always had clean restrooms. After Bill died Paul Shireman took over that chore and did it just like Bill had always done; no fanfare, we just always had clean bathrooms.
Paul had been doing that chore for quite a few years and now has had to give it up. So, our chapter is in bad need of another Pottie Guy. Please volunteer to take over this chore. Maybe we could even set up a rotation schedule as we do on the mowing?
As Craig mentioned in his article, our hangar is beginning to show signs of wear and use and we are going to have to step up our maintenance. One woman commented at a pancake breakfast that the women's restroom was terrible. Sure enough it had a lot of "toad stools" in it. She probably did not realize they were toad poop and probably really thought we were nasty.
While at Oshkosh this year I upgraded my database for one of my GNC250XLs. While I was at your booth I could not help noticing the signs on the wall "upgrade your hand-held database for $35", or something like that. The price for upgrading the database for my GNC250XL was about 4 times that much. People were dropping off their hand helds and leaving them to be upgraded. I simply handed you my data card and you gave me another card. No unit to keep track of and only one interaction.
It seems to me that upgrading a panel mount should not be more expensive than a hand held. The database for hand-helds actually has more info than a panel mount and the process of loading to a handheld versus loading to a data card should not be more difficult. It actually seems to me that it would be easier to update the data card.
So, my question/complaint is why do I have to pay so much more that the hand-held guys do?
I appreciate your comments and questions. I don't think there is anything I can say to relieve your frustration about the cost of the airborne database. It's been the source of many complaints. The lack of competition makes it hard to get a good deal. Manufacturers and consumers alike. I will say this for Jeppesen, they seem to give good service and have very few errors for such a large amount of data. Thank you,
Lynn
