Words from the President

by Bart Dalton

Wow!!!!! I can not believe that this year is almost over and what a great year we in aviation have had. We have flown many young eagles, we have seen many nice airplanes in our chapter come to flight, Oshkoshs 100 years of flight was one of the best ever, our own Tulsa fly-in was one of the best years ever, and we had many wonderful local events to participate in including the EAAs B-17. I want to thank each and everyone who put in the long hours to make these events happen. On the local level we have had many very interesting programs from interesting workshops to seeing many of our local finished projects up close and personal. I want to thank everyone who took part in making these programs happen. Our goal is to make next year as exciting as this years. We are already working on doing that now. We also need input from you all too for help in accomplishing the task.

I hope that everyone is making plans to attend the Christmas party on December the 13th. We will have a fun time recounting our year along with all the other excitement that our party brings. This year we will have a change in our food menu. We will be having Legends Bar-B-Que cater our meal. Please call Sallie Coltharp(272-7255) with your money and reservations. Again this year it is $25 per couple or $12.50 per meal. We will also have our usual decorating party on the date listed in the date section. Please check and plan to attend this also.

My wife told me that I had to have Thanksgiving off this year so to do this I am l flying M-T-W and this will prevent me from Chapter functions on Mondays for this month. I will greatly miss the November meeting. This is our annual pie auction for the Christmas party. Craig will be going solo this year. I always look forward to doing this with Craig as we have a lot of fun. I also will miss buying my favorite pie as my wife will never make me a Rhubarb pie. I usually end up freezing it and along about July when Carol cleans out the freezer I am able to enjoy my pie. Plan on making it to the meeting for a fun time.

Notes from the Treasurer

by Jeff Wedman

As Treasurer, one of the jobs that I must do is remind members that the end of the year is near and it will be dues payment time again. Lynn is going to print a dues form in the newsletter to help me keep track of whos paid their dues. Please use it if you pay by cash or check as it helps me keep my sanity. Dues will be $20 for 2004, same as last year.

This month’s meeting will be the pie auction. If you have never made it to the pie auction you are missing out on one of the best meetings of the year. It turns out to be a lot like Abbot and Costello with Bart as the normal and Craig as the abnormal. I can tell you from experience it is well worth attending. The money raised will be used for Christmas party prizes. So please come to the meeting.

RV-8 N474JW Makes First Flight

Jana and I got our RV-8 to the airport and Bart did the airworthiness inspection on Oct 16. We then spent the next couple of days working on putting it back together and working off the items Bart had found. We had the plane ready for flight on Saturday the 18 but had to wait until evening to fly as the QBs and the Ultra light folks had meetings that day. I didnt want to fly with all those planes in the area. The airport cleared up that evening and I taxied out to runway 17 and did my preflight. Everything was good so I pushed the throttle forward. Now you’ve got to understand most of my flying time is in production airplanes and it always amazes me at the acceleration of these RVs. That 200 horse power Lycoming came to life and that airplane was air born way before I was ready. I only had about throttle when it lifted off so I pushed it the rest of the way to the stop after I was in the air. I did plan to take off; I just didnt plan on that quick. The airplane had a heavy right wing but that was t

Riveting News for November

by Craig Loomiller

I’m mad and just can’t take it take it anymore. I may be wrong, but I think there is a plot being foisted upon us by Mother Nature. Over the last several weeks, the weather has been extremely uncooperative. I believe it has rained on Saturday for the last three weeks in a row. This weather pattern is not very conducive to scheduled flying events. We have had Reklaw, two scheduled Young Eagle events, and the Fairview fly-in affected by the weather. I’ve wanted to take the Warcoupe to every one of these events, but have been denied each time. I did get to fly two weeks ago, though. I was tasked to determine just what the ceiling over Gundy’s actually was. It was 500 feet; a hundred feet lower than what was being broadcasted at Tulsa International. It was sad because we had a whole bunch of kids that wanted to go flying that day.

Oh well. At least all of the events scheduled for the rest of the year do not require a lot of flying. Our Chapter meeting for the month of November is the annual pie auction. I dont know why people want to see us do it, but Bart and I have agreed to do it one more time this year. Everybody seems to have a lot of fun at this event so be sure to bring your checkbook and come on out. There will be a variety of pies available for purchase by the highest bidder. All the proceeds will go to help offset the cost of the Christmas Party. If you havent been to one before, now is your chance. Seating is limited to just 80 people and tickets will go fast. See Sallie Coltharp for tickets.

Chapter Secretary

We have only one item of Chapter business that needs addressed before the end of the year. We have an opening for Chapter Secretary. Gerry Vaughan has done an excellent job for the last couple of years. The term of office is a two-year term and its now time for new blood to step up. We have many capable people in our membership that would be a good fit for this job. It requires attendance to one or two meetings a month to make a record of the meeting. In addition, the Secretary and Treasurer keep the Chapter Membership list up to date. Please give it some consideration. If you have an interest or would like to be nominated, please contact any of the Officers.

Chapter Web Site

Bob Minich has gotten our Chapter Website back up and running again. So if you have a computer and an internet connection, check it out. It is located at www.eaa10.org. The use of this website has the capability to reach out to our membership in many new ways the traditional newsletter can&srquo;t. I for one am excited that it is back up and running again. Speaking of websites, how many of you have ever checked out the national website at www.eea.org. In addition to homebuilder information, there are many other resources available for you to use. For example, there is a map service allowing you to download sectional charts covering any routing between two cities you want. Did I mention that it is free? One of my favorites areas is the monthly EAA calendar that can be down loaded to your own computer and used as the background. This months featured aircraft is a turbine powered AirTractor on floats. You’ve probably seen it up at Oshkosh the last couple of years. It was kind of hard not to miss, since it stands about thirty-feet tall. Each month is different. Instructions for downloading the calendar are right there on the website.

Decorating party

One last item. Be sure and come out for Christmas Party decorating party. It will be held on Sunday, November 30th at 1:00 p.m. In addition to decorating the hangar, there will be chili and Rol-aids available for everyone. Come on out and spend a couple of hours having fun. Ill see you there.

Reklaw Fly-In

This year the weather for the Reklaw Fly-in was less than ideal. Going down Friday the sky was clear but the headwinds were nasty.

sitting at Reklaw Roger White was planning on making the trek in his Pietenpol. That is a fairly ambitious trip for an open cockpit, 85mph airplane even without headwinds. The trip is 309 statute miles. Roger got all geared up Thursday with his plans and even made himself a strip map cut from two sectionals so he could unroll it as needed in the cockpit as he flew. Well, Roger called me about 8:30 Friday morning and said that he was only making 50 mph ground speed and sometimes even lower so he had elected to turn back to Sandridge. He figured that with fuel stops and the headwind there might not be enough hours in the day to get there. I suggested that he unload his stuff and go down with me in the Mooney, and he did.

We had a reasonably pleasant trip down and found best winds and ride between 4500 and 5500 feet. Above 7000 we lost speed and below 3500 we lost speed. At Sulphur Springs, Tx. We landed and walked across the street for lunch. They have a great home cooking style café across the highway.

planes in a row at Reklaw

After lunch we headed for Reklaw and when I tried to find it in my user database it was not there. Somehow it had disappeared, I know I had entered it before. Out comes the user manual to figure out how to enter the coordinates for the Flying M airport. With the help of the manual and good fortune that I had brought the coordinates with me, I got it entered and we went confidently on out way. In years past I have been able to find the airport without a GPS — we get so spoiled.

On arrival at the airport we found Paul Shireman already there with his tent set up. We pitched our tent and blew up our air mattresses. Jim Gallaway showed up a couple of hours later in his Cherokee Six. Jim does not bring a tent. He just puts an air mattress in the back of his Six. There were probably about 60 airplanes there already and we enjoyed looking at airplanes and just sitting and enjoying the weather.

At the Friday night feed they fed over 400 people. There were not that many airplanes there but, the recreational vehicles were in great abundance. It seems that the rec V people enjoy the Flying M airport even more than the aviators.

more planes at Reklaw

Saturday morning the airplanes began streaming in and we very much enjoyed watching the landings. Watching landings is a lot of fun there because of the undulations of the runway and getting the airplanes down below the trees and to the sod.

The weather Saturday kept a lot of airplanes from getting there and the field was never full. I estimate that around two hundred airplanes were all that made it in. Every three hours we had to get in the tent to avoid rain. It would rain for maybe thirty minutes and quit for two to three hours. That pattern went on all day and parts of the parking areas got soft and some airplanes got stuck.

We enjoyed the fly-in as always. It did seem a bit less enjoyable this year though. Maybe it was because not as many from Tulsa came down or maybe the excessive Recreational Vehicles, dogs, golf carts, ATVs or the lack of airplane turn out. Maybe just because Paul and I have been going there for so many years and we remember when it was smaller. It is still the best fly-in around though.

Pie Auction

The pie auction has already been mentioned twice. We have had quite a few “auctioneer wannabees” over the years but, the two for the last several years have proven to be the most pitiful one could imagine.

So, bring a pie/cake/food to be auctioned off.

Decorating Party

We will be having our annual Christmas decorating party this year on Sunday November 30 at 1:00pm. We will start with a bowl or two of chili and then get on with the hanging of the “stuff”. Come on out and enjoy the afternoon. If you have some special decoration you want to contribute bring it out and maybe it will fit in somewhere.

Christmas Party December 13th

It’s going to be another great Christmas party at the chapter home this year. We will start with the social hour at 6:00pm and start eating at 7:00pm. The menu this year has changed. We will be having barbecue provided by Legends Barbecue here in Owasso. We will have brisket, ribs and chicken and all the fixins.

So, come on out and bring a white elephant gift. If you are a boy bring one for a boy and if you are a girl bring one for a girl. I use the terms boy and girl rather carelessly since most of us are a long ways over the hill from being either a boy or girl. In the past we have had some verrrry interesting gifts show up at this event.

Paid Reservations required

The tickets will be $12.50 each and you will need to make reservations because we always fill up. We can only handle about 80 people in the hangar for a sit-down dinner like this.

Call SALLIE COLTHARP at 272-7255 this year for your reservations. You will need to send her a check for the number of tickets you need and your reservation will become valid when she receives the money. Note: her mailing address is the same as your newsletter editor on the front page. You can also email her at 9sacoltharp@cox.net (Note the 9 and delete it as mentioned in last month's newsletter) with your request but, you will have to get her the check some other way.

Web surfers will find the contact information on our home page.

Membership Renewal

At the end of the printed newsletter you will find an application for renewal of your membership for the upcoming year. Please fill this out and get it to Jeff Wedman. The dues are $20.00 per year. If you're reading this on our web site, you can get the equivalent form at to print and mail or bring with you to the next meeting.

You can use your browser's Back button to return to this page after you've printed the form.

December Schedule Note

We will not hold a regular meeting in December.

We will not have a pancake breakfast in December.

A Thought on the Pancake Breakfast

Speaking of the pancake breakfast: Our griddle had gotten very hard to deal with and unreliable. I took on the task of getting some new parts to make it work better. Well --- if you think airplane parts are expensive, try buying parts for a commercial cooking apparatus. You know that thermocouple that goes out on your hot water heater and you can get at Home Depot for four bucks. The ones on the grill can't be had without the whole assembly. I had to buy one thermostat assembly and one pilot assembly for our grill. The bill was quite staggering, rather on the scale of airplane parts. Why am I telling you this? Consider this as a plea for being generous with your donations for the pancakes.

Thanks

Lynn

B-17

Recently the B-17 made it’s tour through Tulsa and I had a chance to volunteer as ground support to help with the tour. I had never taken the opportunity in years past to help with the B-17.

What a rewarding experience!! It is neat to just be around such an awesome airplane, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. The real reward is in getting to see and talk to some of the veterans who come out to see the airplane. It is very touching and very difficult to keep a dry eye when hearing some of these guys talk of their times with the airplane.

Lynn sitting at the controls of the EAA B-17

As I was sitting in the cockpit watching over things while people toured through one old gentleman struggled up the ladder into the cockpit, looked around silently for a minute or two and tears began to run down his cheeks. He finally managed to speak and said “man this brings back some strong memories .” He said “on one mission we came back in with only three crewmembers left alive – the navigator was flying the airplane.” He said that the enemy purposely went for the pilot and co-pilot on the crew and that there were seldom any pilots or co-pilots over the age of 25 — they did not last that long.

The tail gunner position was roped off for the tour and no one was supposed to get back there. Someone asked me who that was in the tail gunner position and I replied “there is not supposed to be any one there.” Several of us went around to tell the person to get out and found a very old gentleman sitting in there obviously reminiscing. We looked at each other and no one said a word – we just knew he belonged there.

Of course there were some funny things also. One young lady came through the cockpit and picked up the “pee tube” (a funnel with a hose on it) and said “yes I know this is what they used to communicate with”. Her husband and I looked at each other and neither one of us said a word.

Thank You, Jim Franklin

Those of you that missed the October meeting missed one of the best meetings. Jim Franklin told us about his flying experiences and how he came to build his “Woodsie.”

The airplane was really a piece of workmanship. For most of us, we just could not imagine going through all the things necessary to design and build an airplane from scratch.

Jim did an outstanding job of keeping us attentive and entertained as he talked. He should be very proud and satisfied with his accomplishments. Jim is a TRUE HOMEBUILDER!!!!
