Words From The Presidentby Bart DaltonIt is a New Year and time to plan for an exciting year for Aviation. This is the 100th Anniversary of powered flight. I cannot imagine what life would be like without aviation. I am sure that people much younger that me say that about computers. I hope that we can make this a year to also remember as a chapter as we celebrate this great event of 100 years of powdered flight. As I enter into my first few days as president, I want you to know that I want to do whatever it takes for all of us to have the most fun that we can have in aviation. Please send ideas and information my way so we can make it a great year and share our passion for aviation with not only each other but with many people who have not yet discovered or experienced it yet. I believe that this is what we are all about. Thanks BhrentI also would like to take the opportunity to personally thank Bhrent Waddell for his great service of duty to our chapter these last two years. Bhrent has always gone the extra mile for our chapter in many hours of behind the scenes work to make things happen in our chapter. Bhrent, it has been a job well done! I have had the opportunity to see many of our members’ handy work over the last year and it was a great amount of fun to issue paperwork on many aircraft. I was privileged to inspect and sign off the great work of Mr. Jon Baker on his RV6A. Not only did I get to inspect it I also was able to make his first test flight. He has a very nice airplane to be proud of. We will have him fill us in about his experience at our next meeting. January MeetingSpeaking of the next meeting, we are going to start the year out with a very interesting program. We will be receiving a program on the Superior EXP engine. For those of you who don’t know very much about this engine, it will be a great meeting to attend. I am very impressed with this engine, as I have had the opportunity to personally fly behind one of these. Our long lost member in exile in California (Dale Olson) allowed me to make the second flight of his new RV6. “WOW”! What a nice flying airplane! By the way, Dale, we need your 2003 dues and out of state dues are double! Please check our snack list for January and make sure and bring lots of home made fudge brownies and chocolate chip cookies. We will also discuss our candidate sponsorship for EAA Air Academy. Annual DuesNow that we mention dues it is that time of the year to annie up and pay. We had a motion to raise our dues this year but I fought hard and would not allow this to happen. They are still just a mere $20. This is such a great bargain for all that it gets you. Remember that if you have been a member in good standing for one year with this chapter and you are building a plane your FAA Special Airworthiness Inspection is free. That is just the inspection. I do charge traveling expenses if you live in California (Dale). Christmas PartyWe had a wonderful time at this year’s Christmas Party. I want to definitely thank John and Sue Kurt for their great amount of effort in coordinating the decorations. I don’t know who took them down but I guess that they were involved. There were many others who also helped. It was a fun time and I am looking forward to this years party that will be on Saturday December 13th. This will not conflict with Antique 10’s party, which is on the 6th. See yall on Monday January 20 at the EAA Hanger.
Treasurer's ReportBy Jeff WedmanI would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am the new treasurer for Chapter 10. My wife Jana and I have been in the chapter for about five years and have been building an RV8 for the last five years. We hope to fly in May. We have two sons, Wesley and Tyler. They’re both in college, Wes is at KU and Ty is at OSU. We have lived in Owasso for the last 17 years. I am employed and hope to stay employed at American Airlines. Jana works for the Post Office in Owasso. Craig’s shoes are going to be hard to fill but I am going to give it my best shot. I am glad Craig is still around as VP, head joke teller, pie auctioneer and sausage burner. He actually does a very good job at cooking the sausage. Come by the hanger the first Saturday after the monthly meeting and find out. I can’t believe 2002 is gone and 2003 is here. But it is and I have my first job collecting the chapter dues. Dues are still just $20 again this year. You can send them to me (there’s a form elsewhere in this newsletter) or catch me at the regular meeting or the pancake breakfast. My address is Jeff Wedman 7435 N. 145 E. Ave. Owasso OK 74055 I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the meetings.
Builders Workshops in Dallas in March
EAA will be holding an Aircraft Builders Workshop on Saturday and Sunday, March 8 & 9 in Dallas, Texas. These two-day courses will introduce participants to the joys of building your own aircraft while providing the knowledge and experience necessary to do it safely. EAA will be offering the following hands-on courses: Sheet Metal BasicsThis 2-day course prepares you to build any sheet metal kit aircraft and teaches the procedures for sheet metal repairs. There is a discussion of all the basics including types of aluminum, rivets, tools, cutting, drilling, deburring, countersinking, and riveting. Tuition for EAA members is $289. Fabric CoveringThis 2-day course prepares you to cover any type of aircraft, whether certified or experimental. Using the Poly-Fiber Covering System, the class will cover DC-3 ailerons. All steps are demonstrated and practiced, including preparation, gluing the fabric, shrinking, rib stitching, taping and spraying. Repair procedures will also be discussed and practiced. Tuition for EAA members is $259. Composite ConstructionThis 2-day course provides you with everything you need to know to begin building a composite aircraft. The course will provide a complete discussion of core materials, reinforcement materials, and different types of resin systems. The hands-on portion includes such skills as bonding, hot-wire cutting, and lay-ups. Tuition for EAA members is $259. Electrical Systems, Wiring, and AvionicsThis 2-day course prepares you to wire your aircraft and allows you to practice the skills you will need to install your electrical system through the use of several hands on wiring projects. Definitions of electrical terms are discussed along with information on selecting the proper wire size, how to route wire and installing avionics and antennae. Tuition for EAA members is $279. Gas WeldingThis 2-day course will give you practical welding theory along with hours of actual experience using oxyacetylene welding techniques. Our goal is to show you the basics, give you a solid understanding of what welding is all about, and to help you discover that you really can build or repair your own airplane. Tuition for EAA members is $289. What's Involved in Kit BuildingThis Saturday evening seminar is a fact-filled discussion of regulations and paperwork, the workspace required, the time commitment needed, the financial investment and insurance considerations. May be taken in conjunction with other workshops. Tuition for EAA members is $25 and includes a pizza dinner. The courses are instructed by experts that not only know the subject matter but know how to teach! Message From The Editorby Bob Minich As your newsletter editor, I found 2002 an interesting year and hope that 2003 will be even more fun. While most of what I do for the newsletter involves assembling the work of others, I am also keenly aware that many eyeballs will see any goofs I make. I would like to thank the regulars at the newsletter folding night (second Monday of the month) who make that task go so smoothly. Contributors WelcomeAs reader of several aviation publications in print and online, I am tempted to reprint some of the great stories I come across. However, the newsletter printing and mailing costs are significant. I try to keep the newsletter focused on a combination of information directly relevant to our members as well as original stories available nowhere else. Over the last year, we’ve published several wonderful stories on members’ trips and building adventures that I hope you have enjoyed. I encourage you to take a few minutes and write up your own flying stories and send them to me. You don’t have to worry about spelling or formatting, as that’s what I’m here for. If you’d like to contribute a story of your own, the best way to submit an article is sending email to me as: You can also phone me if you’d like. As always, I’ll publish just about anything you send, so take a moment and write up a short story on you aviation adventures. Web NewsletterMany of the chapter’s members have opted to forego the printed version of the newsletter in favor of viewing it on the chapter website (www.eaa10.org) every month. This saves us on mailing and printing, helping to keep your dues low. If you’d like to do the same, send Jeff Wedman or myself an email and we’ll stop the paper version and send you a monthly email when the newsletter is posted online. . Discount Annuals Available
Edgar Hellyer has been a member of our chapter for a number of years. He is a retired A&P Mechanic with IA rating and is presently building an Avid Flyer kit plan. Even though retired, Edgar has told that he wants to retain his IA rating for a few more years, primarily because of his EAA activities. To do this, he must perform a minimum of four annual inspections each calendar year. In this regard, as a special service to Chapter 10, he has offered to do four non-complex aircraft annual inspections a year at $100 each. So far this year, two of our members have already accepted his offer, which is made only to Chapter 10 certificated aircraft owners. Therefore, only two more inspections remain for this year at this very special price. They will be available until March 31, 2003. Even though your inspection is not due before that date, you might want to consider having it done a bit early to take advantage of this very special offer. Give Edgar a call at (918) 834-7215 for details. WHO BRINGS SNACKS????Below is a list of who brings snacks for each meeting. I am sure the A-C's will set the standard for the new year's snacks. WEB PAGE NEWSLETTER (note the URL) Our web page address is: Mark will email a notice to each member who chooses to use the WEB version of the newsletter a note stating that the newsletter is ready and on line. Of course those who do not opt for the WEB version will continue to get a hard copy. The chapter encourages everyone to opt for the WEB version rather than the hard copy. Please send me an email to minich@ionet.net stating that you want to use the WEB version of the newsletter if you opt for it. One advantage of the web page based newsletter is that we can finally have good quality color pictures of airplanes and activities.
