Treasurer's ReportBy Craig LoomillerThat's all for this month, Craig
Reklaw Fly-Inby LynnColtharpEditor’s note: the name Reklaw is Walker spelled backwards. It is that time of year again. The last weekend in October. What happens then? The fly-in at Reklaw, Texas. Many of us look forward all year to this event. It is hard to describe why we like it so much. I guess you just have to go there and experience to understand. The Dates this year are Oct. 25, 26 and 27. The Tradition BeginsA few of us of us discovered this fly-in several years ago while we were just a little south of there at a fly-in called Just-Plane-Fun. We really had a good time at the JPF fly-in and while there someone suggested to us we should stop at Reklaw on our way home. We stopped in Sunday morning on our way back to Tulsa and had breakfast. Finding it was a challenge but we finally found it and dropped in. The people there were real hospitable and we could see the setting at the Flying M Ranch Airport was really pleasant. It was just a slash cut out of the typical east Texas piney woods. We decided right then we would come back year and enjoy the whole weekend. The next year we were good to our word and several of us made it down for the fly-in. We also discovered that the airport was not any easier to find from the north than it had been from the south. There were a good number of airplanes at the fly-in back then but nothing compared to what it has grown into now. Apparently we were not the only ones that enjoyed the “layed back, kick back and relax” atmosphere at the fly-in. This event is basically a “camp in the tent” event. They do provide some transportation into the nearby towns for motels but, if you don’t camp at the airport you are losing the best part of the “atmosphere” that makes this event so special. They provide porta-potties but no shower facilities. Heck, it is usually cool that time of year so just turn those drawers around and go another day without a shower. The Tulsa ContingentThe Tulsa contingent usually shows up with 4 to 10 airplanes and a real congenial group of aviators. We usually pick our camping spot on the west side of the airport and just north of the pond and try to save space for the ones we know are coming down. Some of the more memorable shows of friendliness and camaraderie are the time “someone” let the air out of John Kurt’s air-mattress and he spent a lot of time and effort in the pond looking for the leak. Another time Dale Olson had a flat tail-wheel tire and it required nearly all of us to give him enough “good advise” on how to fix it. Some people actually began to feel sorry for Dale as he was having a hard time coping with all the experts. Normally we leave on Friday in time to get to Sulphur Springs, Texas where we walk across the highway to a diner and have lunch. They do not provide lunch on Friday at Reklaw but, they provide all the rest of the meals. From there we head on south to begin our attempt to find the Flying M Airport. Even with GPS the normal approach is “fly directly over the top of the airport” and still can’t see it until someone calls on the radio and informs you that you have “just flown over the field”. The field is plenty long enough for our little airplanes but has some undulations in it that can make for an interesting re-launch if you are too fast on the ground.
Message From The Editorby Bob Minich Contributors this MonthWell, it’s time for me to piece together a newsletter for this month and I’ve been left holding the bag almost single handed. Thanks again to Lyn Coltharp for an article on the upcoming Reklaw fly-in/camp-out in Texas. If you’d like to contribute a story of your own, the best way to submit an article is sending email to me as: You can also phone me if you’d like. As always, I’ll publish just about anything you send, so take a moment and write up a short story on you aviation adventures. This MonthGundy’s Wing DingSome of you have been wondering when the annual Gundy’s Wing Ding was scheduled for this year. Roger Wieden let us know at the last board meeting that Sunday October 20th is the day to mark your calendar. The plan is to eat at 1:00. Although the wings will be provided, guests are asked to provide other potluck style goodies such as veggie salads or deserts. I’m told last year’s event brought ought about a hundred people and only a handful of wings were left. Activities for the kids (even the ones legally considered adults) are planned. Aircraft and classic cars or even the occasional APC are invited for display. This should be quite a fun day. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of Gundy’s opening. The little airstrip in the middle of nowhere has sure come a long away. Officer electionsThe election of EAA 10 Officers will be held at the October meeting. President, Vice-president, Secretary, and Treasurer serve a two-year term on the Board of Directors. The nominating committee will present officer nominations, and nominations will be accepted from the floor. I encourage everyone to get to know the officers. ProgramsI’ve been told that October’s presentation will be on King radios. I don’t know much more except that this was apparently arranged around Oshkosh. Sometime in the future we hope to have a presentation of ballooning. Of course, the November meeting will be the annual Pie Auction where we learn how good those auctioneers we see on TV really are. Of course, our’s are always more enjoyable. The Pie Auction in turn provides funds for December’s Christmas Dinner. Expect additional information in next month’s newsletter. This month, we will be looking for feedback on possible Christmas Dinner menus provided by the caterer. WHO BRINGS SNACKS????Below is a list of who brings snacks for each meeting. I am sure the A-C's will set the standard for the new year's snacks.
