April Program

Have you ever thought about restoring an aircraft? Maybe just a small plane to give you something to take casual weekend flights around the state or Great Plains? Well, if you have, this month's program should be of interest to you. Roger White has completed his most recent project, the restoration or rescue of a Piper Tri-pacer. Besides this project, Roger has built several other planes and has been flying his red Pietenpol while the Tri-pacer has been in progress. Whether you are considering a kit plane, restoring an older plane, or just trying to keep a production plane ready to fly, Roger's experience with the Tri-pacer and other projects will be helpful.

Young Eagles and Pancake Breakfasts

In February and March, Chapter 10 has had Young Eagle flights following the pancake meal that is served in the early morning (some people call it breakfast). Sixteen Young Eagles were flown in March, and a greater number are expected to fly on Saturday, April 27, at 9:30, at the Hanger. If you haven't flown Young Eagles before, put April 27 down as the day to begin. EAA is planning on flying 1,000,000 Young Eagles, and you can be a part of it while enjoying the experience with some excited passengers and the rest of the Chapter's Young Eagle pilots and ground crew.

We aren't scheduling the April Young Eagle flights following the Pancake meal. Instead, a Poker run will take off after the dishes are done. The details are elsewhere in this newsletter but note that the day will start and end with a meal. What more could you ask for, eat, fly, win big bucks and eat again.

Thanks for the help!

Every Saturday following Chapter 10's monthly meeting, a group of early risers get to the hanger and cook the pancakes and sausage, heat the coffee, and set out the OJ. The consistent effort by members Paul Shireman, Lynn Coltharp, Craig Loomiller, and John Forister make the pancake breakfast a regular event and a steady source of funds for the Chapter. This is just a note of appreciation to them for their contribution to the Chapter.

Sport Pilot, Biplane Expo and Tulsa Fly-in

The Sport Pilot 90-day public comment period will end on May 6, 2002. For now, express your comments (such as, "Why didn't they include Cessna 150's?") to the FAA.

For anyone who hasn't seen it listed on a current calendar of events, the Biplane Expo is scheduled for June, and the Tulsa Fly-in is scheduled in September. Both events will return toBartlesville this year. They were cancelled in 2001 because of the construction to the Bartlesville airport taxiways.

Chapter Hanger Work Day

Once a year our hanger needs a little TLC. This year we will install the air-conditioners, patch the roof, really scrub the grill, and clean everything else. Sound ambitious? Not for this Chapter! We've always had a great turnout for workday, and a little effort by everyone gets a lot done in a hurry. Plan on being at the hanger on Saturday, May 11, at 8:00 a.m. to give a hand. The Chapter picnic is Sunday, May 19, and it's always good to get everything clean before the picnic.

Hope to see you at the meeting.

Renewals and Membership

It is now April, and for the most part, Chapter membership renewals have been completed. I'd like to thank everyone who sent his or her renewal in. At the end of last year we had 155 members. This year, as of the beginning of April, we have 128 members who have renewed. This is fairly normal as we typically have a drop off of membership at the beginning of the year and slowly build up to approximately 150 members by year’s end. The paper version of the March newsletter was sent to all our members with renewal reminder stickers on the cover for those who haven't yet paid this year. That was their last issue. So if you know some one who didn't receive this month's issue, have them get a hold of me.

Chapter Web Site

Chris Kessler has agreed to take over the chapter web site, so electronic versions of the newsletter will go out this month as normal. If you would like to receive the electronic version of the newsletter, send me an email requesting to be put on it. My email is ccaloom@dellepro.com. It cost the Chapter about 50 cents a month per member to send out the paper newsletter. Over the course of the year postage and printing add up, receiving the electronic version helps out the Chapter a little bit over the long run. So give it some thought.

That's all for this month, Thanks.

Poker Run

 by Craig Loomiller

We are going to have a SPRING FLING POKER RUN on Saturday April 20th after the Chapter Pancake Breakfast. As many of you know, in the past whenever a poker run was scheduled, it was a sure sign that it was going to rain that day. This year is going to be different! I have received, from unnamed sources, a list of all the days that are going to be warm and sunny this year. So come on out and enjoy the nice weather on Saturday.

New Finish Line

This poker run is going to be a little different. Normally all of our runs start and end at the Chapter hangar at Gundy's. This event will begin at Gundy's where you'll pick up your first card, then will proceed to Haskell, Wagoner, Tahlequah, and then finally to Claremore for the last card. We will determine the winning hand at Claremore instead of Gundy's. The awards will be followed up by lunch consisting of hamburgers and refreshments (donation requested), courtesy of Claremore Airport.

Who can enter? Any chapter member and their guests are eligible to enter. If you can fit them into the airplane, then they are qualified. All it takes is a $5.00 entry fee from each person and you are good to go. The best poker hand will receive 50% of the pot, second place 30%, and third place 20% of the pot. Nobody's going to get rich, but everyone will have a good time. It should be a lot of fun!

Sun'N'Fun - The Ultimate Experience

 by CJ Larsen

This is the second and final piece CJ wrote up about his past Sun’N’Fun experiences. I hope you enjoy it as much I have. – Bob Minich

Week #2

This Early Bird experience at Sun’N’Fun gets more interesting every day. Barbara is still assisting Sue Kurt and her flower girls (usually referred to as the flower babes). The flowers they set out this week number in the thousands. The “Babes” have a serious problem however. It seems that squirrels are eating the buds from their petunias. These buds are so tasty that the squirrels have no interest in the bait in the traps that have been set. I am still working at the museum. This week we moved some of the airplanes again and patched holes in a couple of walls and repainted them. Judging from the number of nail holes in those walls, one would think that Barbara had been loose in there with her hammer.

Slowly, I am beginning to understand the Sun’N’Fun volunteer organization and how it works. First, there is a definite pecking order, and everybody is the boss. Anything worth doing in the first place is worth doing over, and from my point of view, it seems that all information is proprietary and dispensed on a need to know basis. I don’t need to know much. I have found that it is best to do only what I have been asked to do. That is meant to be an observation, not a complaint. We are enjoying the experience, meeting a lot of nice people, and having fun. The weather is nice and we enjoy riding our bicycles around the grounds in the evenings. The fresh orange juice from oranges growing here in the volunteers campground is excellent.

Week #3

Florida weather isn’t always as we expected. It has been cold and rainy this week. The temperature got down to a record breaking 29 or 30 degrees Wednesday night and the locals seemed to think the ice age had returned even though daytime temperatures were around 60.

This week I have been helping to install some overhead lights to illuminate a wall of aviation art displays. Barbara is still splitting her time between the “flower babes” and her paperwork duties. The flower bunch is still setting out new flowers, shrubs, and trees by the truckload.

Social items this week included a group trip to Bartow for a volunteers dinner (which was graciously paid for by John Burton, director of Sun’N’Fun), and a wedding here on the grounds. The bride and groom are both early bird volunteers. One morning at 0622, we watched the space shuttle rocket into space from the comfort of our RV here at Sun’N’Fun. It was spectacular.

Week #4

The pace is picking up in anticipation of the fly-in starting April 7. There are crews unrolling and mending the miles of orange plastic safety fence used for security and crowd control.  Cleanup in the auxiliary camping area in the pasture has begun, and mowing, placing stripes and fencing in the auto parking areas has started. There are a lot of improvements and changes in the works for this years event. The museum will have a totally new look, there are new computers to speed up the visitor registration process, the county roads around the airport have been improved with additional traffic lanes and this year they are open (not under construction as they were last year.) Security will be a new issue this time and there is a lot of planning and staffing underway in an effort to minimize delays with admission and registration. Pepsi has replaced Coke as the soft drink vendor here at Sun’N’Fun so new dispensing machines are appearing around the grounds.

Week #5

Social events this week included the third in a series of Aviation Expressions Lectures Friday evening. Scott Crossfield was the speaker. The next lecture will feature Paul Poberezny on March 15. A barbecue was held Saturday night and the ladies meet every Tuesday evening for craft projects.

This week we completed the installation of lighting for the art display in the museum. Next week the art will be hung on the walls. It sounds like my job next week will be to help paint some wooden display stands outside of the museum that contain engraved bricks. Our resident budding artist, John Kurt, is busy creating metal sculptures for center pieces to be used at a special fundraising gala and auction to be held on April 6.

Electronic newsletters

It looks like we are ready to go again with electronic newsletters. Please bear with us as we work out any difficulties transitioning to a new web master. If you aren’t getting a printed newsletter and you are supposed to, let Craig Loomiller or myself know and we’ll figure out what went wrong. If you were expecting the electronic form of the newsletter and got the paper instead, we want to know that, too.

I was informed that I didn’t include a membership application/renewal form in the last newsletter. I was also informed that those with the pretty stickers requesting a renewal at penalty of not receiving further newsletters might find the coincidence a bit odd. If you aren’t getting this newsletter because you didn’t pay up then please fill out the form on the final page and mail it to Craig or myself. I haven’t yet scheduled two pie auctions in one year, but I might find a way given enough time!

Let me remind everyone that submitting stories or pictures to the newsletter editor is as close to a guarantee that a writer gets an article published. I know you’ve got stories or lies to tell. This month, we have some lies and stories submitted by others for your enjoyment.

WEB PAGE NEWSLETTER

(note the URL)
(mark as favorite place)

Our web page address is:

http://www.eaa10.org

Mark will email a notice to each member who chooses to use the WEB version of the newsletter a note stating that the newsletter is ready and on line. Of course those who do not opt for the WEB version will continue to get a hard copy.

The chapter encourages everyone to opt for the WEB version rather than the hard copy.

Please send me an email to minich@ionet.net stating that you want to use the WEB version of the newsletter if you opt for it.

One advantage of the web page based newsletter is that we can finally have good quality color pictures of airplanes and activities.
