At the last Chapter meeting several things were accomplished - three watermelons were consumed in fairly short order, the available details of the Sport Pilot certificate and aircraft category were presented, and a proposal was made to air-condition the Chapter's hanger. This newsletter will update the progress on the Sport Pilot certificate and the air-conditioning of the hanger as well as mention a few benefits that we receive from EAA national.
The Sport Pilot web page at www.sportpilot.org indicates that the Office of Management and Budget has met its deadline to respond to the FAA by asking for more details about the economic impact of the Sport Pilot certificate and aircraft type. This is not the approval that was hoped for, but it is reasonable. The FAA still emphasizes that the proposal is "alive and well." More details on this when they are available. Many Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the Sport certificates are listed on the Sport Pilot website. While there are too many FAQ to present here, this commonly asked one is worth pointing out. "Can someone with a valid drivers license but who has been denied an FAA medical still become a Sport Pilot?" The answer is "yes". If a person is fit enough to drive a car or motorcycle then certain categories of flight should be available.
At the August meeting, the proposal was made to air-condition Chapter 10's hanger. Craig Loomiller asked the membership if anyone might have a spare three-ton A/C unit just taking up space. Donating it the Chapter would help keep the cost to the Chapter down. Bart Dalton realized that if he gave the Chapter the extra unit he had setting on his hanger floor, he could get more airplanes into his hanger. (Well, at least he wouldn't have to keep moving it while he remodels his hanger.) Thanks to Bart, the Chapter is on its way to some cool meetings. We can still use another unit if someone has one.
The resources available to Chapter 10 and each individual member from EAA national are bountiful. These resources are available through the dues paid to national, not to Chapter 10. Chapter 10's dues cover just Chapter 10 expenses. Some of the EAA benefits everyone should be aware are the liability insurance in place to cover national EAA members at EAA functions, the EAA website at www.eaa.org, and EAA's magazine Sport Aviation. If you are not a national EAA member, you won't be covered by their insurance. The EAA website is a ready source of information. The latest on Sport Pilot certificate and links to flight planning websites are available.
Sport Aviation magazine is incredibly relevant and useful to anyone interested in aviation. One particular article on Night Flight in the September issue is a good one to read as summer ends and the days become shorter. At the end of the article on page 110, is a checklist of 10 tips for "Night Flight." This is good information to review.
No words from the V.P. This month but Bart tells me that Mrs. Gunderman is still on to talk to us about Gundy's airport. As most of you know Gundy's airport was started by Mr. and Mrs. Gunderman many years ago. Maybe Mrs. Gunderman can tell us some interesting things about Gundy's airport and her late husband. Be thinking of questions that can be put to her about the history of Gundy's Airport.
The annual WING DING at Gundy's is scheduled this year for October 21. This event always proves to be a fun event to kind of wind down the flying activities for the season.
It was started by Phil Hart and Malley Norton the past owners of Gundy's. When we built the EAA hangar at Gundy's we began using our facilities and manpower to put on the Wing Ding each year. Phil and Malley always provided the wings for the cookout.
This will be the first year to have the WING DING under new owners, Roger and Meri Wiedon and they have graciously offered to continue the tradition of providing wings for the WING DING.
So bring a dish to share and join in on those scrumptious barbecue chicken wings. The chapter will provide tea to drink.
As many of you know the Ponca City Aviation Booster club has been putting on a "first Saturday breakfast for quite some time now. It has grown into a very popular event and they get a good turn out each month. It is a fun place to go on the first Saturday each month. Most of the members are also part of the local EAA Chapter 1046. They have a really active group and many of them have shown up at our chapter events.
In September they put a little different twist on their monthly breakfast and invited folks to come on over Friday night and have hamburgers with them and campout for an early start at the breakfast and fly on over to Perry for the Perry Fly-In.
Several of our Chapter members went on over Friday night and put up our tents. The burgers provided by the Booster Club were very good and we really enjoyed the meal.
The weather was really pleasant for a campout and Jerry McNeil, John Kurt and
myself really enjoyed the evening. There were seven tent campers for the
evening. One couple across from us came down from Wichita and got in too late
for the Hamburger dinner.
They were able to go to Enriques, on the field, and get a couple of nice Mexican
dinners for the evening. After their meal they uncorked a nice bottle of wine
and had a very pleasant evening. See what you are missing?
We talked to the Ponca City folks and asked what they thought about us coming over for a Friday night campout on a regular monthly breakfast. They thought that would be good so, be thinking about going to Ponca City on Friday before the first Saturday and camping out. We can always eat at Enriques.
Many of you have gotten a flyer about the annual campout/fly-in at Reklaw, Texas by now. It is scheduled for Oct 26,27 and 28 this year. Several of our members have been attending this fly-in for quite a few years now. It is situated in the piney woods of east Texas. It is really a pretty and tranquil setting on a private airport with a park like appearance.
There are usually five to ten airplanes from our chapter there and sometimes several motor homes from our chapter show up too. We all have a great time visiting and looking at airplanes. One of the more fun things is watching the arrivals drop in over the trees. Of course first, one must find the airport before they can land. It is swath cut out of the pine trees and is difficult to see until right on top looking down at it. Even with our modern day GPS navigation one can fly right over the airport and not see it even though the GPS says "here". Ask John Forrister about that. There is an ever-popular tale going around about a Bonanza that gave up, after wandering around an hour talking to the folks on the ground at Reklaw, because he was running low on fuel. True story!!
It is getting time to be thinking about our chapter officers for next year. We did not have our Board Meeting this month and I have lost track of what the Board will be recommending this year. Of course, nominations from the floor and volunteers are always welcome.
Along with the officers the newsletter editor job is up for all takers each year.
I have been doing the newsletter for quite a few years now and my enthusiasm and ideas have waned through the years. I need a reprieve and it is time for some new blood as newsletter editor. We will need someone to take over the Newsletter Editor for 2002.

Mark will email a notice to each member who chooses to use the WEB version of the newsletter a note stating that the newsletter is ready and on line. Of course those who do not opt for the WEB version will continue to get a hard copy.
The chapter encourages everyone to opt for the WEB version rather than the hard copy.
Please send me an email to scoltharp@aol.com stating that you want to use the WEB version of the newsletter if you opt for it.
One advantage of the web page based newsletter is that we can finally have good quality color pictures of airplanes and activities.
