Words From The VP

Bart Dalton

It is hard to believe that time has come for another meeting. I managed to make it past my yearly check ride and have been really busy inspecting aircraft. I hope I am getting a cut on the rash of new members with newly build aircraft. I never thought I would be so busy when I offered my DAR services to our EAA Chapter. I have issued paperwork on three aircraft this past month.

Dustin Norland finished an RV-6 , Jack Woehl finished an RV-6A , and John Nys finished a Turbo RV-8A. It is neat to see all these new aircraft coming to life to be a part of our chapter. I hope that this is a taste of things to come for construction projects with members in our chapter.

The material that I covered on preparing final paper work and the final inspection for amateur built aircraft should be appearing on our web site soon for your reference.

THIS MONTH'S PROGRAM

This month we will have the pleasure to have Rob Summers from the Tulsa Tower bring our program. He will also be available to answer any questions that you may have about our local area and the new regulations and changes to our air control system. If anyone has a program or info for a program please let me know and we will work towards that program. Keep your wings level, nose up, and the winds at your back.

DUES DATE

Our erudite and zealous treasurer, Craig Loomiller, has reminded me that it is time to pay your dues for 2001. The dues will be $20 again this year. I have been a member since 1977 and the dues have always been $20. How many things have stayed the same price for 23 years?. Yeah, yeah, I know, "some things like TV's and microwaves have gone down"!

I will include a membership application in this newsletter. Fill it out and mail it to our treasurer, Craig Loomiller. The address will be at the bottom of the application. Note: This year we will be asking for your email address also. It turns out that email is a great way to communicate with a group of people. We also prefer that as many people as possible go to the web page to read our monthly newsletter. More on that later.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST

After the "lay off" for the Christmas season I know that we are all very eager to get to the hangar on the Saturday after out meeting for some more of those really great pancakes. I know that the chef is ready to do some flapping. It has been three months since he has been able to exercise his culinary skills. Again it is on the first Saturday after the third Monday. "It don't get any easier even after years of trying to figger out when the hell the pancake breakfast is goin to be."

Go ahead and make plans to also attend the "ANNUAL MIDWINTER PANCAKE BREAKFAST" on February 24, also. Plan to bring some friends and invite everyone you see.

This midwinter event has been going on for quite a few years and was originally dreamed up by a long time EAA supporter, Bob Moore. Bob is no longer with us but, we certainly appreciate his efforts in getting this event started. The idea is to drag all the aviators out because everyone has been holed up all winter and needs to get out and spread a few lies around. I will include a flyer about the Midwinter pancake breakfast in this newsletter. Hopefully some of you will post the flyer at appropriate places around the aviation community. Note: We have moved it from January this year so we can have more time to get the word out. Let's have a great turnout this year

I LEANED FROM THAT

by the editor

About seven years ago I rebuilt the O-360 in my Mooney. I tried to be as thorough as possible and really enjoyed the process a lot. This was the first time I had the opportunity to do a complete rebuild. In the past I had done cylinders and split the case a few times but never a complete rebuild.

The whole process was an exercise in education as well as being thoroughly enjoyable. Of course the most enjoyable was assembling the engine with all the components having been reworked and looking shiny bright and clean.

When I put the engine back in the airplane and got all the controls hooked up it started up promptly and ran good. This was quite a satisfying experience. There has always been one point that bothered me and has continued to worry me though.

A local accessory rebuild shop had rebuilt my mags for me. My mags are Bendix and I elected to rebuild them rather than buy a new set of slicks. That decision cost me a lot of unnecessary bucks. That point is just an "aside" to the point I am trying to get to though. When I mounted the mags to the engine I could not get them to time on the proper timing mark.
If I pulled them out and mounted them one tooth off I could not quite get them down to 25º and If I mounted them one tooth the other way I could not get them up to 25º. Well I decided that being off 1 and 1/2º would not be noticeable and went on my merry way.

While doing the annual this year I decided that I was tired of fretting about the mag timing and was going to get to the bottom of it. I had previously done a lot of checking of gear alignments and things other than the mags. I took the mags to the shop that had rebuilt them and told them that I had never been able to time them to 25º since they rebuilt them. They basically called me a liar and began to try to find things that had worn or were wrong with the mags. They claimed that the points were "melted" and the capacitors were 10 years old and there was oil in the cases. They said I needed to leave the mags with them and let them clean them up and "fix" them. I reluctantly left the mags with them and requested that they concentrate on what could make the mags not set on 25º. All weekend I fretted about them replacing things that did not have anything to do with my problems and bill me some high bill. Monday morning I called and asked that they not do anything to my mags and I was coming to pick them up.

I figured I could buy two new Slicks cheaper than get them to "fix" my old mags. After shopping around to find that the cheapest I could get a set of Slicks was $750 I decided to have a try with another accessory shop here. These people seemed much more customer oriented and to my pleasant surprise suggested what might be the problem before even looking at them. When the technician took them to his bench someone asked if I had tried swapping the drive gears.

It turns out that there is a different angle between the keyway and the gear teeth on the left and right mag. It is not a great deal but, very easily seen by looking at them. They reversed the gears and this solved my problem.

What did I learn??? I learned that the gears are different and even more importantly I learned that the integrity of the first shop is very poor. They must have put the gears on wrong when they rebuilt them and it seems they wanted to run up a big repair bill with me rather than suggesting something as simple as reversing the gears. With all their experience rebuilding mags they surely knew about the different gears and the problem caused by getting them wrong.
