THIS MONTH’S PROGRAM

This month we will elect a new slate of officers for the 2001 year. The candidates are:

President: Bhrent Waddel

Vice President : Bart Dalton

Treasurer: Craig Loomiller

Secretary: Not finalized yet

Vicki Pletcher was going to continue as secretary for 2001 but, her job situation has changed and she will be unable to attend meetings.

PIE AUCTION

November is always our annual PIE AUCTION so be sure to attend. Bring a pie to be auctioned off, or any other food item you are proud of. Cakes, steaks and turkeys come to mind. This event raises money to subsidize our annual Christmas party and it is always a lot of fun to see the highly competitive bidders go for broke. Our own Craig Loomiller has “volunteered” again to be the auctioneer and has promised us one of his great jokes to start off the bidding. Mike Trusty has even been known to bring our favorite pancake helper to get in on the bidding. Now, let me tell you, when that sweet little voice bids $15.00 no one can stand to bid against her. We are losing one of our “big spenders” at the auction this year.

As many of you know Dale Olson is moving to California to resign from his bachelorhood. We will all miss Dale, not only at the pie auction but, at all of our events. – GOOD LUCK DALE!!

Thoughts from the President:

by John Forister

This is the last newsletter for the year.  So, I thought I would thank you folks for putting up with me during my term as Chapter President.   I’ve had a great time and hope that you have enjoyed the last couple of years.

I really appreciate all the help from the other officers, the Board and all of you members.  There have always been volunteers to take on the myriad of tasks that arise during the course of a year.

Frequently I have occasion to visit with members from other chapters and to read about their activities, problems and successes.   It always strikes me that we have a truly great chapter.  When I am questioned by prospective members, It is easy to turn it into a bragging session.

We have the pie auction and the Christmas party remaining for this year’s major activities.  Then we will kick off 2001 with new leadership.  Please let them know how you would like the Chapter to support your interests.  And above all, pitch in when you can.

We are losing a hardworking officer.  Vicki Pletcher, Chapter Secretary, has accepted a promotion and transfer within her company, Williams Communications.  I know that everyone appreciates her hard work and enthusiasm as much as I do.  She will be commuting from Tulsa to Houston for a while, so we should get a few more chances to visit with her.  Good Luck Vicki.

FLY-IN AT REKLAW

by Paul Shireman

The Annual Trek to The Flying M Ranch

Chapter 10’s representation at this year’s event was one of the smallest, two airplanes and three members. The only other time our representation was so low was several years ago when Jerry McNeil and I flew down early Friday and landed in a very wet environment. Jerry likes to tell everyone about being able to read his daily newspaper that night, in his tent, from the continuous flashes of lightning.

This year, Friday morning dawned with less than ideal weather. Originally planning to go were Bhrent Waddell and his wife, John Forister and Larry Brooks, and Paul Shireman. Bhrent couldn’t get his plane to the runway because of the wet conditions so it was down to two airplanes. We met at the EAA hanger about 8AM for a cup of coffee. There was a fairly large window to the South for a VFR departure. At 9AM John decided to get his plane out and load up and gas up. The window to the South was getting smaller so I decided to head on out with the plan to meet at Sulphur Springs for lunch. The trip was uneventful but as it turned out, I ate alone. When John was ready to leave the window was gone.

So Friday night I was camping all alone in our usual spot by the pond. The pond could almost be called a lake now as Dave has enlarged it by 5 to 6 times. John Kurt will have plenty of water in the future to find those mystery leaks in his air mattress. When night came there were 93 airplanes on the field.

Saturday dawned very foggy. John Forister and Larry Brooks arrived in time to circle overhead and listen to some evidently better equipped planes, a Cessna 180 and two Bonanzas, make landings in the fog. John wisely chose to divert to Jacksboro and wait it out. When the fog did lift about 10:30,  the arrivals came fast and furious. By mid- afternoon an estimated 175 planes were on the field. Severe weather was then forecast for Saturday night and this caused some early departures.. The weather went to the North of us and we ended up with two great days of perfect camping weather.

Sunday morning, after a great breakfast, we broke camp. I headed off to Houston and John and Larry headed North into some weather. So we’re looking forward to next years (17th) Flying M Ranch Fly-In.

If you’ve never been there you ought to do it.

PLANE CRASH

by Bart Dalton.

I would like to inform you all of the tragic plane crash on October 30th of a twin engine Duchess that claimed the life of a dear friend of mine from Germany. Mr. Detlef Bloch had come over to fly and visit our family several times along with his wife (who lost her life to Cancer about a year ago). He really enjoyed flying. It was so tragic that he had to loose his life doing what he really enjoyed doing.

TECH REPORT

by Bart Dalton

It has been two months since I have given some info on progress of some of our member's projects. I had the great pleasure of inspecting Mr. Greg Hales RV-8. I also had the opportunity to test fly and fly about five hours on Ken Cook’s beautiful RV-4.

Mr. Greg Hale did a beautiful job in building his RV-8. It is loaded with a full IFR Panel and three axis autopilot. The engine is an IO360 200 HP Lycoming engine with a constant speed prop. He has not painted it yet but it still looks great without paint. Greg did a wonderful job with his great attention to detail in his finishing work on everything. It was a pleasure to issue the paperwork on the aircraft. I have seen it flying and it looks great in flight.

I was greatly honored to be able to test fly Ken Cook’s RV-4. His attention to detail was great too. Ken’s plane was selected as the winner of the Tulsa fly-in. If you happen to see the plane around I encourage you to check it out.

There is a big Pow-Wow that will take place at Oshkosh in December to try to rewrite and rework all the guidelines and rules for issuing the paperwork for newly built aircraft. This is something that we need to watch very closely and should hopefully benefit us as homebuilt builders greatly.

Happy Building,

Young Eagles

By Bob Rothlisberger

Since I took over as Young Eagle Coordinator we have flown 70 young people.  At the Tulsa Fly In at Bartlesville we flew 48 youth from the Rejoice Christian School in Owasso.  In October the Prue Elementary School made it’s annual trip to Gundy’s.  Twenty-eight third graders were flown that day.

We were fortunate to have excellent weather both days.  We finished the Bartlesville flights just as the wind started.  The weather for the Gundy’s flights could not have been better.

Thanks to the pilots, ground crews and the ladies that helped with both events.  Without your help the program would not get off the ground, so to speak.  Your efforts and sacrifices are what make the program special.
