THIS MONTH’S PROGRAM

I understand that we are going to get a chance to look at Ken Cook’s beautiful RV4. Bart Dalton brought it up to the Tulsa Fly-In at Bartlesville for Ken and it looks great. Ken is being cautious about flying it until he gets tail dragger proficient and Bart has been escorting it around the sky. Bart reports that it flies great.  All of you RV builders who  need some motivation to get with your building program need to come out and look at this fine example.

 TULSA  FLY-IN AT BARTLESVILLE

After a long spell of HOT AND DRY the weather decided to cool off, cloud up and blow for the annual Tulsa fly-in at Bartlesville. So, the number of airplanes was down this year but, there were still a good number and quality of airplanes to ogle.

On a personal note, my logistics this year required a good sense of humor. I took the showers up on Thursday morning and planned to spend the night in Paul Shireman’s tent so, all I needed to take were my sleeping bag and mattress. Thursday afternoon after Paul finished flying Young Eagles we set up his tent and when I grabbed my bag of mattress and sleeping bag ---- it was my tent, not what I needed.
Paul said “no problem, I’ll just fly you home and you can get the other bag with your sleeping bag and mattress”. Well it is not that far so that will work out just fine. Since we certainly did not need two tents I decided that I would tidy up a bit and take my “extra” tent back with us and leave it at home. The next day the wind came up and blew Paul’s tent down, breaking two poles in the process. No problem we will just go into town and buy some more tent poles. We could not find the proper poles in town. No problem, we will just go back to Tulsa and pick up my tent which we had so promptly carried back home yesterday. We folded up the remains of Paul’s tent and put up my tent for Friday night, no problem. John Forister was camped next to us in his tent so Saturday afternoon he took down his tent and loaded it in my pickup. I assumed he wanted me to take it back home with me and I  left Bartlesville around 4:00 Saturday. Well, John had his coat and clear glasses in the stuff I carried home. This left John without a coat on a cold and windy day and only his dark sunglasses to fly home with on a dark and low visibility evening. No problem.

 NEW OWNER OF GUNDY’S

by Phil hart and Mallie Norton

To all EAA members:

How do we say good-bye??  WE DON’T! We welcome and congratulate Roger and Mary Wieden as the new owners of Gundy’s Airport. The Wieden’s became new owners effective September 19, 2000. We welcome their enthusiasm and fresh ideas. We have enjoyed our business relationship with all of you for the last 23 years and look forward to a new relationship as airport users

  Phil Hart and Mallie Norton

Editor’s note: We have enjoyed a long and friendly relationship with Phil and Mallie. They have been easy to work with and agreeable to everything we have done at our hangar. I feel we will continue that same relationship with Roger and Mary Wieden.

 WING DING

Sunday OCT 08 at the hangar 1:00pm. Bring a side dish to share. It is time once again for the annual WING DING at Gundy’s. This is always an enjoyable event. Sometimes the weather is hot and sometimes it is cold. This year it looks like it may be a bit on the cool side. Since we can close up the hangar and eat inside we can eat in comfort. I guess since the Wing Ding will be over by the time most of you get the newsletter I don’t need to waste space writing more about it except to remind everyone that Phil Hart and Mallie Norton have always provided the wings for this gathering and they are providing them again this year even though they have already sold the airport.

 FLY-IN AT REKLAW

This fly-in is a long time favorite of a bunch of EAA Chapter 10 fliers. It is scheduled for
October 27 and 28 this year. It is really a pleasant way to “wind up the flying season”. The airport is a private field owned by Dave Mason. It is a cut out in the East Texas piney woods, literally. One of the fun parts is to see if you can actually find it. Even with a GPS you still may cross right over the field and not see it. Last year, having been there five or six times before, I flew right over the top of it and still did not see it until the ground radio said “ mooney over Reklaw if will dip your wing you will see the field”. Kind of makes one feel foolish but, you will certainly not be alone if it happens to you.

Once you have successfully spied the field it is fairly easy to get in. There are a couple of things to be aware of though: landing to the north – land as short as possible to avoid some of the humps in the middle of the field.  landing to the south land a bit long since it is a little rough on the North end. The field is plenty long and plenty wide but, hit the humps with a little extra ground speed you may be launched again just in time to deal with another hump. They always have a good turn out of airplanes at this event and it is the most pleasant setting that one can imagine. Nearly everyone camps out however, they do have a bus to take people into the nearby villages for motels. If you have never been, make an effort to attend and you will probably be hooked into going every year.

 NEWSLETTER DEADLINE

. I would like to have your articles or information by Thursday after the first Monday.  We always fold the newsletters on the second Monday. That means that I have to get all the editing done and get it to the printers. Sometimes I procrastinate and don’t get it printed until Sunday or Monday but my goal is to get it printed by Friday after the first Monday.

YOUNG EAGLES

Sept 21 at Bartlesville a group of Young Eagles were flown. I do not have a report on it but, understand that all went well and there were a good number of kids and adequate airplanes and pilots to fly them with.

Notice that Bob Rothlisberg is our new Young Eagle coordinator. Mark Laboyteaux found himself too loaded down at work to take on the task of coordinating the Young Eagle rides and asked to be  replaced. A great big “THANK YOU” to Mark for his work – we all know it takes a bit out of one’s life to take care of this sort of thing. Also, a great big “THANK YOU” to Bob for agreeing to step in and continue with the Young Eagles program. This is certainly a worthwhile and successful program. While we are at it, a great big “THANK YOU” to all the pilots who give of their time, airplane and fuel to fly the Young Eagles.

Many may not realize the importance of this sort of program but, the future may prove that it has made an impact on keeping General Aviation alive for future generations to enjoy.

I understand that a Young Eagles event is scheduled for October 17th. Check with Bob Rothlisberg for details.

PIE AUCTION

Nope, not this month. Next month. Those of you who remember the good old newsletter editor had the pie auction in the newsletter for the wrong month last year. We always have the pie auction in November and that is the plans this year. So, be thinking about what kind of pie you would like to bring to be auctioned off in November. Old soft spoken and timid Craig Loomiller has agreed to be the auctioneer this year again. Hopefully, he can get started off with one of his famous jokes again. More next month.

 SKIATOOK FLY-IN

The folks at Skiatook are planning to have their fly-in again this year and it will be October 14. All pilots flying in will receiver complimentary lunch for themselves and crew, and may enter for a chance at a $200 cash prize. Craig attended this event last year and said it was well organized and a fun event. The word is out that they really want to get behind it and make it a great fly-in. So plan on attending this year.
